Connecting rod engraving

I have a few forged steel connecting rods that I recently received, and the caps were supposed to be marked so I don’t get them confused and mix up the caps. Can the lasers engrave my rods?

It won’t engrave metal, but, you could paint a section and burn the paint away. Or you could ceramark it with the laser.

What is ceramark?

This is the effect I’m after.

It’s actually cermark

If you’re putting this inside the engine and using it, I wouldn’t count on it staying put (just an opinion; I have zero experience). It is essentially powder coating that is sprayed on and then fixed by laser.
Here’s some discussion vis-a-vis “home made”:

If you’re wanting it for a paperweight, I’d think it’ll work just fine…

I believe Cermark falls under the aerosol spray ban.

I actually use this at home to mark stainless on my laser, used the same way you’d use cermark

An alternate idea would be to apply paint or tape, use the laser to put the number, arrow or whatever you need, then electro etch it.

Cermark is used to mark engine parts.

The cermark lmm-14 seems to be made for high temps. I’d bet that’s whats used on engine components. I may try that, but I can’t find temperature specs for it.
