Show and Tell November 2024

Please post a picture & description in this thread of anything you are working on this month at the 'Space.

Lots of us are doing cool things at DMS all the time, but most of our fellow members don’t get to see. Post here to share the interesting things you are doing @ Dallas Makerspace this month!
:white_check_mark: small craft project
:white_check_mark: large CNC router project
:white_check_mark: building a table
:white_check_mark: 3D printing a cosplay prop
:white_check_mark: science experiments
and so much more!

Posting here helps not only promote Dallas Makerspace, but could inspire others to make something. It will also help PR enrich social media content in our blog, Instagram, TikTok, or other social media (with attribution to each maker of course).

:bulb: NOTE: Please try to include the following on each post, to help make for better social media content!

  • a QUALITY photo
  • a note about WHAT you’ve made
  • WHO you are (for attribution)
  • HOW you’ve made it
  • and WHY it was made

. Greetings from the sewing room. This pillow was made by one of our new sewists in our most recent Sewing 101 class. It is 12x12 and utilizes a historical quilt block called the economy block. It is an ambitious project for a first time sewist because the entire block, after the central square piece, is composed of triangles making precision very important. This new sewist did a great job!

I knitted a lap blanket afghan and braided a rug to accompany a rocking chair I made several months ago.

The afghan is knitted with 50 weight thread on homemade 0.5mm knitting needles (I also made cable needles and stitch markers because this is my first mini-knitting project). The photo of me knitting gives an idea of scale.

You can see the cables here. Blocking is done on a cork board with entomology pins.

You are absolutely amazing. I cannot imagine the effort your work takes. For someone with my big mitts it would simply be impossible.

I guess I forgot to post the chair. Original design. Cherry wood. The only straight piece is the brass counterweight under the seat. Gotta love Fusion 360 for the modeling capability!

That, again, is amazing!

This is my first plasma cut project and also my first powder coat project. It took the entire village to coach me through this one, but it was a lot of fun and I’ll be doing this again!

After I cut the two larger figures that go on my fence, I cut the cat heads from the scrap as a powder coat test. The kiddos will like those.

I actually made this in September but it was a gift for my boss, who was retiring.
I bought a kit from stewmac and upgraded the pickups to Seymour Duncan antiquities with the help of @ozindfw during an electronics office hours.
The top is stained with a natural finish and the back with a chocolate. The whole thing was then sealed with tung oil. The electronics are sealed with copper tape.
The case was lasered with the help of @got_tools and hand painted with testors enamels.

The gift has been given, so it’s safe for me to post now.

This past Sunday used my 2 new easels made possible thanks to the woodshop classes with Thomas, Burt and Max. Will continue to work on improving the design now and eventually replacing the older easels.

We had the Bob Ross oil painting class, painting the northern lights, expanded to 12 people with the new easels!

Bob Ross show, The Joy of Painting, has inspired countless artists over the years.
To celebrate the anniversary of Bob’s birthday we had a special “birthday” Bob Ross oil painting class at the Dallas Makerspace Sunday October 27th. The class used his techniques to recreate one of his beloved Northern Lights scenes along with decorations, cupcakes and fun door prizes!

Thank you also to Gena for putting up the posters and recording and creating social media for the event!

Now just need to put those new woodworking skills to use to make a stand for 12 easels, instead of in my guest bathroom shower :slightly_smiling_face:

Happy Making!

Pics below of a 3x39 belt grinder and heavy duty rolling industrial cart I made. Grinder plans and parts came from a kit. All the welding, powder coating, and metal bending was done at the space. I still need to finish the cart. Drawer hardwar. Side skirts, and painting. I did the final assembly of the wheels, electrical wiring and VFD mounting, and mounting to the cart in my shop. But all the hard stuff was at our maker space. I love it there!! I’ll post pics of the cart and built when I finish it.

This is a wedding season for me!

My nieces wedding next week (her sign is the chalkboard with the shower type).

My boss’s daughter’s wedding is Dec 15. I’m working on signs for her wedding too.

The first one is for my niece for her bridal shower. and the 3 mirrors are for my boss’s daughter’s reception for the cocktail menu.

Shower sign was done with chalk markers on a board I got from Michael’s. 16x24”

The mirrors are 7x13” and used a stabilo all white wax pencil for the layout and then went over with Sharpie oil markers. The oil will stay on even when cleaned with glass cleaner, only way to remove it is with acetone (nail polish remover).

I have one more for the Dec 15 wedding, a chalkboard for under the tree to take an ornament but my boss should be getting that to me tomorrow!

Also just submitted my 3-part calligraphy class for December! Come learn to make pretty things like these!
