Just thought I’d share a teaser…the unboxing has begun!

Don’t skip over adding the nuts in step 3 of the E-axis assembly…took me nearly a week to figure out what was wrong.

I’ve been tempted to upgrade… Took so long to get my Mk2 that it was obsolete by the time I got it. I just installed the multi material upgrade and wish I never did.

oh, why - the waste?

@steve this is my first printer build. Please let me know if you think of anything else to look at or consider.

@JRay I ordered mine on January 4th and just got it last week. I passed on the MMU, assuming there would be growing pains. I’d still lke to get one. Interested in your experience with it.

All - should I build it on top of a piece of plywood as a base?

No need for the plywood base. Mine was solid as a rock and I just followed the instructions.

The mmu upgrade basically turned a great printer into a passable Bowden printer. I’ll admit that it does work, but its bastardized, and the print quality definitely suffers. The new mmu upgrade is probably pretty good, but I’d have been happier if they just scrapped v1 and sent my money back. As is, I miss my original mk2 setup.

@JRay Are unable to uninstall it?

Probably could, but I’d rather craigslist it for the price of a mk3 kit.

Just read the instructions in good light with good eyesight and you should be good for the build. And when they say things like “DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THIS SCREW!”, don’t over tighten the screw.

I just have mine setting on its base and have had no issues. A lot of people will put them onto anti-vibration mats in case you are printing something with a lot of fast movements that could cause issues.

As for the MMU, I was excited about that as well but it appears to still be pretty buggy. I’m going to wait for a while before investing in that. I would rather have half of another MK3 at this point anyway.

I started the frame last night…moved it to marble tile flooring for the extruded rail alignment and leveling…is likely the most level piece of anything I own

I really appreciate their notes about when to not over tighten and things to really look at.

@steve I’m on the y axis assembly…and I have two nuts left over…oops…can’t figure where they may have been intended…

Edit: comments in the webpage version says they a leftovers from a design change. Whew…

Y axis is assembled. The rails and bearings feel “grainy” when I move the carriage…

It’s alive! Kinda…it’s passed the self-test. I’m calling it a day…

I printed my face (@fedakkee, thanks for the 3D scan). Now I need to start thinking about permanent setup…I’d like to start first with software.

What is everyone using at home?

  1. First, it’d like to setup a direct PC interface via USB.

  2. Then, I can move to a rpi via USB.

  3. Finally, I can consider using a the little wpi if it’s gets a little better.

Thoughts? Currently I’ve got an IP camera trained on it. Will likely set up 3 or 4 smaller IP cams attached to an enclosure…can Octoprint use IP cam feeds instead of using WebCams?

My enclosure will need to wait until May…but I wouldn’t mind y’alls thoughts on that as well.

Here’s a pic of the printer working in the dark…

Awesome! I’ve had a MK2 since last July and I love it.

One tip that they don’t tell you - mesh bed leveling on Prusas isn’t a magic bullet. Print something small at the front, rear, left, and right of the bed simultaneously. You’ll be able to tell if the first layers don’t look the same. Adjust the the “bed level correction” setting until they’re all uniform. (I couldn’t tell why some prints weren’t sticking. It didn’t occur to me to check this.)

Bumping my post to the top… Does anyone have thoughts/preferences on printer control software? Hardware?

I haven’t set mine up yet but I was just planning on doing the Pi/Octoprint combo.

So - where is the separation between slicing and octpprint…does octoprint also slice? Or does it do basic slicing, where KISS does more advanced slicing, and you should use octoprint only for control and monitoring?

Does anyone have an opinion between Kiss vs Prusa Slicer?

Another question - what is the difference between uploading to octoprint vs Uploading to the SD Card?

Is the SD Card the local card storage on he PI as opposed to the built-in card reader on the printer?

Where are the files actually stored between the two options?

Thanks.
