I just use Prusa Control for slicing right now. Works decently enough so far.
Uploading to Octoprint is done pretty much exactly the same as it is at the space. Through the network.

Looks like “upload” loads to the Pi’s SD Card
“Upload to the SD card” loads to the Printer’s SD Card.
Uploading to the SD card on the printer takes hours.
But - if the file is already on the SD, it prints form the SD cards without issue.
But - if the PI fails, then your stuck.
I’m curious if PowerPanic, Crash Detection, Resuming and Filament Detection function correctly if the Pi loses power.
Kinda feel the need to buffer the whole setup using a UPS
I’m using a UPS, but mostly because brownouts happen once/month in this apartment complex. Super annoying.
I’m driving mine with Pronterface over USB and I’ve got a webcam pointed at it, so I can remote in to check on it every once in a while. The downside is if your PC crashes you lose your print (this did happen once. Silly windows). The printer’s also plugged into a remote-controlled outlet in case something goes really wrong. Overkill? Maybe.
Not overkill at all! I just bought my UPS. I was about to plug a Wemo into it…until a realized the battery would kick in…will have to wait until the current print finishes and put it inline…
Didn’t catch this until it was too late…was trying to print sheep…wolf got to the heard before I got home…
Was it a bed adhesion wolf?
Unfortunately it was bad settings for the baby lamb…
@themitch22 Yes…I did very well by not ordering the MMU in January
To answer your questions, I learned on slic3r PE, so that’s what I’ve continue doing to use. I like the control granularity. My understanding is that prusa control still uses Slic3r as the backend, but they’ll tell you that it’s the more user “friendly” version.
I’ve also run octoprint and AstroPrint. Very much the same as the slicer discussion. Octoprint has more functionality. Astro is more user friendly and easier to set up for remote use (WAN). I’ll probably end up going back to Octoprint. I did not like the iOS controls octoprint had available.
I’m totally guessing, but you may be able to get by with just a cheap USB power supply on the pi. If I remember correctly the prusa has onboard capacitors for brownout protection.
@steve That 25hr print came out badass. Was that one of their presliced images or did you come up with that?
Got it from Thingiverse.
Very nice. This printer is on my list to get. Curious to know how the filament changing works out for you.
Me too. I have the i3 Mk2 with the original multi-material upgrade and I don’t care for it. To the point that I really just want to get rid of it and trade for a new Mk3
So far, working great. I did a 2 color sheep for my mom today. Currently printer a one color object, but I was able to tell it which color to use and it had no issue switching
