I’m on my 11 month anniversary of membership and how things are done makes more sense as time goes by from Day1.
I know some folks seem to think that if we just told everybody everything completely about DMS at orientation and /or the Wiki, then the new members wouldn’t go through the ‘buyers remorse’ syndrome. Not true. It’s gonna happen no matter what, just some members can handle the situation better emotionally and some will not. IMO, those that cannot handle it emotionally and leave, it is probably better for them and DMS.
The reason everybody is gung ho on Day 1 and has depression on Day 30 is due to the reality that new members think DMS on Day 1 is there for them and their desires and needs immediately. It’s NOT. It’s a shared resource shop that takes time to share with volunteers. This place is frickin’ dangerous. There is a process to that.
Anybody coming in thInking it is about them(and why wouldn’t you, that’s the only reference you have), will be disappointed initially. But with use over time, it gets better.
Now that doesn’t mean it’s perfect and there are processes and changes that will take place in its due time.
But, bringing in new members is NOT broken, it’s being done about the best it can be done under this structure.
