Hi Guys
So I went ahead and created some logo source files and guides on best usage of the new logo.
The files are located in the Files/committees/pr/ folder.
included are the following files:
.eps = illustrator eps file with vector logos.
.psd = photoshop file with shape based layers so you can adjust the size kinda like a vector
.png = kinda like a jpg but with a transparent background.
Please copy the files to your own directory and do not over write the files in the pr folder thank you
I canāt wait to see the new logo used in your projects
No disrespect towards anyone involved in designing the logo that you made; but, Iām really partial to the Dallas Makerspace Logo thatās already being used. Our logo is recognizable and well liked.
Was there a particular reason you designed a different logo, or were you just looking for a change? It seems something this significant should be brought to vote - or at least openly discussed prior to trying to push a change.
Even though I personally would prefer to continue using our current logo, I realize that itās not all about my opinion alone. For that reason, I would really like to see input from other members before any changes are made to our logo / branding.
Posting a thumbnail here for people to look at would be nice.
The logo was brought up at the memberās meeting a while back (November, Iām confident). I also donāt get it. The current logo doesnāt look dated or out-of-style and IIRC the new one reminds me a lot of the old Gamecube logo.
The old Gamecube logo:
but then againā¦ I canāt remember what the new DMS looks like other than saying it looks like the Gamecube logo.
As for meeting or discussion, I meant either a meeting that the discussion was on the agenda to allow members an opportunity to discuss it - out at the very least a post here on TALK specifically to discuss it (which looks like this thread will be a good startā¦)
Since Google crawls these forums pretty quick and efficiently, I want to add that this is the current Dallas Makerspace logo:
The logo that Michael created and is proposing to replace our logo is posted in my previous response.
Iām on my phone right now. If anyone has a more clear copy of our current logo, please feel free to upload it in place of the fuzzy version I had available to upload at the moment. Thanks!
From the meeting where the logo was āintroducedā, I had an overall positive impression of it. Very thoughtful and evocative and nicely symbolic. It is my opinion that much effort went into making it symbolic, which to the best of my knowledge is lacking in the current logo (or none of us understands, perhaps).
However.
I like the current logo for its history, its āofficialā feeling, and the air of āit means whatever it means to youā-ness, which is a hallmark of āgood artā, in my opinion.
Mostly I think a consensus should be reached, and made official (i.e. board approval). Right now it rather feels like some ārogue agentsā have decided on a new logo, have started printing it up and distributing it, and no one has any say about it. Thatās no beef for me personally, but I think it leads to splintered recognition and, at least in my case, confusion.
I am not interested in doing this myself for a variety of reasons, but should a simple āNew logoā vs. āold logoā poll be inserted here?
I personally am little torn, as I tend to be when ānew and better in some waysā replaces āold, comfortable, and recognizableā.
I think both logos are pretty neat. The new one looks new school (sleeker), the old one looks old school (more blocky and dated looking). The old one, though, contains a mechanical sperm looking thing (purportedly a muffler but I canāt un-see the sperm) so Iām going with that one.
Iām not overly IT savvy ā¦ but I believe there is a way to search the internet for images. Has anyone searched just the Hex with the Wrench? Curious to see if we may be close to someoneās Tm. If anyone has a link on how to do this, Iād appreciate it so I can be less internet ignorant.
Per the description of the original draft of our current logo posted by itās creator, @Haley_Moore:
I made our icon a plug, which stands for plugging in (unspecified)
tools, robots, computers, etc, and also for plugging members into a
community that shares their interests.
A little.
It hugely reminds me of Kobalt toolās logo (as sold at Loweās). Kobalt (tools) - Wikipedia
But then do a search for āhex logoā and youāll find itās a very popular figureā¦
