Hey guys, I’m a new member, and I want to give back. Since I’m still getting up to speed on the things happening at DMS, I want to ask how I can help. I want to make this a regular thing, so I’ll be donating one hour of my time every month – most likely more, but I don’t want to overcommit when I’m busy.
Please ask me for assistance if you’ve been wishing you had a helping hand. I’m open for anything – pet projects, renovations, instruction, organization, etc.
Here are the things I have a reasonable level of confidence:
Anything software engineering – user interface, data science, infrastructure, cloud computing, integration/orchestration, etc.
Mechanical stuff – building, repairing, assembling, etc.
Design – brainstorming, sketching, painting, mixed-media, interactive, etc.
CAD/CAM – Solidworks, Slicers (Cura, Simplify3D), Maya, etc.
Basic electronics – I’ve been tinkering for a few years, and am working my way through Art of Electronics
Technical documentation – fond of the stuff that makes most people yawn
Cooking – anything besides baking
Cleaning – not afraid to whip out the elbow grease
Organizing – social events, labeling, just putting stuff in the right places
If I don’t have time to help this month, I’ll keep you in mind for next month. By the way, I’ll be out of town this weekend, so really this question is for the month of May.
This is the single greatest need for the space, and the best part is you don’t need anyone to ask for your help! All that is required is that when you see a mess someone else left, you clean it up, put the tools away, etc… Best part is that as a new member, this will give you invaluable insight as to where things are kept!
It did. Ray and I did as much as we could. He has a bummed knee right now and I’m simply unskilled at hanging stuff thats not art. So we decided to hold off and beg people and bribe…I’m good at bribing.
Wanna take it on? I’ll be at the space tonight and Saturday
Compliments to John (@johntron) for taking extra steps!
I’d like to point out that this “help us” page is linked from the “Main Page” on our wiki, and I should think tossing some of these projects on that page MIGHT help folks know what all needs done.
It further links to this “TODO” list page, as well as this “Current Needs” page.
Schedule a class following dallasmakerspace.org/teach so you can get honorariums. We need more design classes and digital medial classes like photography and editing, organic 3D modeling, etc. I’d like to check out Simplify3D if you’re available.
You opened a can of worms volunteering, we always need stuff, just look at Logistics committee.
Cool - thanks everyone! When I’m back next week, I’ll:
Update those wiki pages
Sweep a space or two (will do this every time I visit if I can)
Put some tools away (same as above)
Volunteer to teach a class in something like camera basics/composition
… And do one of these:
An item or two off the wiki pages
See if Logistics/@ESmith still needs help with the storage
@themitch22 I’d love to show you Simplify. It’s installed on my Windows machine at home, but I’ll see if I can set it up on my MacBook. I love opening cans of worms like this. It helps highlight what’s important, and hopefully I can inspire others.
Feel free to help me prioritize - if something is more dire/useful, I’d like to do that.
We need more classes, in how to for inkscape and basic photoshop. We have them occasionally, but they keep being when I can’t make it. I doubt if I am the only one.
Inkscape is needed for so many tools.
Some of us are old folks and need lots of HELP.
Yeah I agree with Cairenn is teaching design classes. Inkscape is really popular, we need more classes like that, I know we’ve had Blender classes but a 3Ds and Maya class would be nice.
I could teach that. Once I learn Inkscape, I could teach that as well. Maybe I’ll aim to teach one class a month. I don’t want to overcommit though, so we’ll see how it goes.
