List of words that will be censored on talk

Is it true that a plug-in was added that will censor certain words that some find objectionable? One post had cock pit censored but iY have been a joke.

Guess it wasn’t a joke. Who decided to add the filter. Will they please post here on talk the complete list of words? What if someone’s last name is Cock?

Edited a typo, changing Will be to Will they

Does wanking get censored. Fanny? Bloody Hell?

Shall we add those 3 to the list? I don’t Charlie is offended, but others might be.

How about the 7 words not allowed on TV?

Unless there is a naughty word plug-in for audio, this is gonna make it. NOW what?

I remember my grandmother (b. 1899) telling about how they used to have to use the term b cow to refer to a bull, since bill was considered crude language. I’m pretty sure bull will make the cut here, but should it?

I do get the point of the plug-in, and am in no fucking way endorsing crude language, but if folks want to make their point, won’t creative spelling circumvent it? For example, the totally innocuous term cock pit gets censored, but does kock pit get axed?

I just want to â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  say that this â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  is â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  and â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  to the â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â– ! To think that â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  is â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  bad is â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  â– â– â– â– â– â– â– !

Not sure if you mean the plug-in or my constant posts that may be only pleasuring myself.

Should we also censor replacement words? Since they are just the same thing after all.

Same meaning, different envelope.
Dang, darn, heck, crap, and the like

Don’t forget friggin and dagnabbit. Actually I don’t know what dagnabbit could possibly replace, so it may be an actual naughty word itself. Sorry about that.

Tommy, I take the blame if you looking for someone to be upset with. I didn’t add the filter, but pretty sure I raised the issue and the moderators discussed it and decided to activate a filter. I suspect there will be some tuning required to make names like D!ck and words like cockpit pass. My guess is you probably don’t need to filter much beyond the famous 7 words (google it), but I also expect the moderators to get the kinks worked out sooner than later. Oh, and of course there will be members who will play around and get cute with creative spellings and substitutions … that goes with the DMS culture.

But the more important thing is why did I raise the issue? It’s not because I can’t curse a blue streak or I personally am over sensitive about profanity. I raised the question to the candidates for the election and apparently it got back to the moderators who decided to act.

But here’s why: I had a member who home schools her kids tell me that the profane language on Talk made her very uncomfortable. I looked around and noticed other members whose outward appearance and manner suggested this person wasn’t an anomaly. From the best I can tell, Talk is considered to be a promoted venue for publishing DMS news. The organization actually wants members to go to it to keep up with what is going on. It may be a lot cleaner than many other volunteer, user beware internet forums, but I don’t know if any of those other forums are “encouraged” the way Talk is. Talk is not a user beware election … it’s a promoted news channel. To me it is more like primetime TV than an internet forum the way DMS tries to uses it. The television networks and radio broadcasters have some relatively minor restrictions that have been accepted by most of the public at large. Mind you I get that DMS thrives on a certain amount of creative chaos and have no interest in interrupting that. I think creative chaos can exist with the relatively minor restrictions that prime time broadcasters operate under and furthermore I think it is a simple courtesy that members should extend to each other.

So, that’s why I raised the issue. Feel free to campaign for a change if you must. I maintain that if you can’t make your point without seven or so specific words, that’s a different problem. That and simple courtesy for other members is not a bad thing.
