List of words that will be censored on talk

Or as Hoss would say, dagummit.

TLDR version:
I don’t object to the filter or anyone who wants it.
I thinks it’s unnecessary, but was having a go at showing that I believe this one is ineffective.

Long Version: Bertrand, thanks for your post. It serves to remind me that what one’s point is not is not always clear. I am not upset with the filter. I did get on a roll and was amusing myself (I think much more than I was amusing others!). Really my point was that such efforts are ultimately futile. Futility alone wouldn’t be a reason to ignore a big problem that needs addressing. I just don’t see bad words (not referring to pejorative, just naughty words, cuss words, etc.) as something that must be banned in a forum such as ours. It’s not a stance on the need or even right to swear. I don’t need to see the words in print. It’s more that using a plug-in to try and ensure certain words won’t be viewed seems like it’s is addrsssing the smallest of problems, and only for those that consider it a problem. I agree with everything you said. But o don’t think this will make people communicate more civilly, be nicer, or improve their attitude.

I really do see very few cuss words on Talk. Even so, I don’t object to the filter, in spite of poking fun at. That’s really the spirit I intended. I absolutely was ridiculing the filter itself, Not anyone who installed it or likes it. appreciate you providing the context that prompted the change.

Tommy, it’s not trying to and I agree it won’t really impact those things very much, if any. And I’ll add that it is a very small percentage of all posts. Sometimes in Makery, but more often it shows up in passionate posts dealing with the organization’s drama hot button at the time. I tend not to see it as a biggie until it’s brought to my attention by someone who sees it exactly that way. Probably not unlike one person likes extra pepper and another feels the dish has been ruined by an excess. (I was so tempted to use salt and salty, but I digress!) DMS has become a small town as big as a lot of small towns scattered across Texas. It’s only natural that the population has some very conservative members when it comes to what they choose to read or watch. It’s for that segment of the population that agencies like the FTC regulate what is allowed on public broadcast. The FTC doesn’t regulate cable and subscription programs the same way. You are free to pay for and watch or listen to just about anything that’s not criminally illegal because it is viewed as having been a choice freely made by the consumer. Free network programming is held to a different standard because the consumer at that point has gotten down to only two options: the broadcast content or don’t participate. Internet forums that a person self selects and chooses to participate in are free to allow whatever their policies decide and those can be wild. Talk is not one of those … it is the news station for DMS and best compares to network broadcasts. It’s the platform we wish more, many more, would use. Given that, should the organization have a stance that says we agree that since the majority are accepting … you small group of conservative members just have to tough it out?

I don’t think DMS should do that any more than we would be OK with members disparaging each other for their looks, disabilities, etc. Sometimes a majority opinion should decide what is OK, sometimes respect for a minor member segment is the better approach.

The famous list only has 7 words and I think it probably could drop to 6 since the p version of urinate can be acceptably used in a common statement about wasting a resource. So you forfeit 6 words (and obvious derivatives) out of the whole language. Not a big deal. A tiny bit of courtesy for the sake of someone else … helping a few makers feel more included in DMS.

As the filter was rolled out, it had some surprising and rather humorous flaws … cockpit being a great example. But in true Maker fashion of try, test, try again … adjustments have been made. See … cockpit passed! More adjustments are still needed.

As for work arounds … sure that’s going to happen … and it will be funny. It takes an edge off in a way that often moves a word out of the ā€œoffensiveā€ category and into the ā€œdistastefulā€ category. I for one think that’s effective enough … the minority of members got something and the majority gave up very little.

And one last thought … it’s not a given it won’t modify the temperature of flames from time to time. That few extra moments to think about a work around will occasionally be like counting to 10 and a rewording that’s a touch in the direction of disagreeing in a better way.

A classic!

Censorship is stupid. This isn’t China. If you don’t want to see fuck then get a browser plugin like a gentleman and leave the rest of us out of it.

Censorship goes beyond a few words and tries to control content. The FTC is not in China.

But your browser plugin is a great idea and something I would not have thought about. So since this isn’t for me, it’s for what I would suspect won’t be tech savvy folk who prefer not seeing things … how about putting together a very easy to follow Wiki page that guides a non-tech through a successful install?

I’ll do that if this nonsense goes away as a result.

Sorry, this whole bit feels more like regulation for regulation sake. So many options that the few can enact vs changing it for the many.

Why is this even happening?

Morality police. Gosh darn it!

I think your suggestion is a good one. Will you do it to create a simple alternative, without the guarantee that the nonsense will go away?

Agree. Communication and conversation solves a bunch of stuff. I applaud Bert for his consistently reasonable analyses. I give myself a golf clap (that doesn’t sound naughty does it?) for my attempt at light-hearted ridicule. While this filter is a knee-jerk reaction that is common, I don’t think it warrants a GET OFF MY !$&%ing LAWN response.

Arse vs ass. One is a vulgar British term for a person’s hindquarters, the other has an accepted synonym for Donkey. Only the purely vulgar one isn’t censored and the donkey one is.

I worked at a place where the owner was very anti-cussing. My go-to was ā€œSon of a MOTHER!ā€

What the actual smurf? We are smurfin’ smurfing Talk now?

Actually I’m not opposed, I just think the membership at large should have been alerted.
