Jointer down? (FIXED 10/1)

Hey was in today to use the woodshop and noticed the jointer was down. My understanding is it’ been down for about a week now? Was wondering what was going on with it (noticed some belts hanging from the adjustment wheel) and when it might be back up and running.

Thanks!

There was a mention about a motor start capacitor on another thread…

We should order start capacitors in bulk. Or come up with a rotating assembly that you can turn a crank and have a new one installed inline.

Or fix the actual problem…

We really should update that motor to 3 phase. Never have to worry about another damn start capacitor or centrifugal switch.

Yeah, starting to think so too.

IMO, the most likely cause of the cap and motor failures is overloading due to inadequate dust collection (DC). The new DC system should fix that.

Also, the Powermatic installed motor overload protector can’t be set low enough to properly protect the genuine Powermatic motor and run capacitor. IIRC, the lowest setting on the protector is 15 Amps and the motor’s FLA is around 12 or 13 Amps. I set it as low as it could go when the last motor failed. @Tapper, you might want to ask about that next time you’re on the phone with Powermatic.

Have we inspected the centrifugal switch?

Jointer is back online.
