In town for a day, looking for place plug in for a day and code, day pases available?

I’m meeting someone in Dallas. I’m looking for a place to plug in with a little bit of desk space. We’re trying to get a snapdragon processor (https://developer.qualcomm.com/hardware/dragonboard-410c) running debian to talk to some cameras. Are day passes available? In at like 10 AM, out by 4 PM.

Thanks
Brandon

In a word, no. We are a member based organization that gives access to tools. You’re looking for a co-working space. Check these out!

But it’s not a bad idea to consider offering at some near point in the future, maybe $25 per 12 hour period? Front of building access only.

Here’s a newer co-working spot - Communion cooperative in Richardson at Belt Line and 75.

This is probably not doable with our model and available staff.

The doors are locked 24/7 and no one is officially at the space during any period other than open house. Secondly, what would we be giving access to? 3d fab, creative arts, electronics, ect.? many of these committees now have required training to use their tools, of which you wouldn’t have the time to get that training with a day pass. So effectively, they could sit at a table and use the internet?

There are many places in DFW that are geared better for that service and also offer the service at a much lower price point. Plus, it would save us the increased liability of dealing with a forth membership class that effectively will never go through training and may just try to use tools because they have access to the facilities and could tail other through the doors to the warehouse. Doesn’t seem worth the required effort, liability and staffing to make this a viable option within our model currently.

It would be awesome to offer day passes. There are tools that don’t require training and day passes would be useful sometimes - for example, family is visiting from out of town and wants to play with my clay in fired arts while I am also there or if I’m trying to bring someone in to “sell” DMS and get them to sign up. $20/day seems reasonable for a day pass.

Luckily, much of that is already available. As a member, you can bring visitors with you already and I believe they can use hand tools that do not require training as long as they are with you. I believe this scenario would also work for you leading them through the space in order to sell them on the idea of being a member as well. The key to your scenario is that you, THE MEMBER, are leading, guiding, and not abandoning the untrained person at DMS.

The major problem with the day pass is the staffing required to allow a service like it at DMS. We would need at least one person at the front door at all time in order to let day pass members in, guide them through what they are allowed and not allowed to do and to keep a light eye on them to make sure they don’t go into restricted area without a member guiding them. These issues are all subverted, by you, @Julie-Harris, guiding, leading, and staying with your visitor around the space.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure what the rule was about non-member visitors. I agree with you about day passes for people who don’t have a member staying with them.

This discussion needs to be split off into its own thread.

My initial reaction is that it is a security/liability risk. But we already offer a day pass. Just that it costs $50 and it is good for a month…

No need to split,
I think we are still on topic as there is not a day pass option and we are discussing alternatives and the idea of a day pass.

This is what I was thinking. We already trust people with the keys to the kingdom from day 1. We have classes where non-members come in and have the run of the place for a few hours (I am referring to the actuality, not whether or not they are supposed to…).

If we do a little rigging of security for back-of house access, give people a one day badge that only works for front door(s) and stops working after set time, train full members how to issue these badges after payment (yes, we’d need some web support/changes), require them to wear a big red hat (or whatever) that said “day member”, I’d think it would be OK, despite the nattering nabobs of negativity.

Note: I would only really be in favor of this if the demand/revenue was clearly there. To date, this is only request for this I can remember seeing on forums.

I wouldn’t even give day passes a badge. Just let them buy a cheap “day pass” wrist band in front with the rest of the DMS merchandise using Square. They would have to ask for help opening the doors - non-members who are taking classes have to do this anyway.

Stan will have to answer this, but I do not think a wrist band would be any less expensive than the current fob or card.

It’s probably not expensive either way. I was thinking about this type of wrist band. My biggest concern was volunteer time, a wrist band seems easier than activating and deactivating a fob or card.

The band will still need to be activated to work and our infrastructure has to know when to deactivate it. Doable if we choose to offer it.

The band doesn’t need to work. It identifies to random members passing by that they can let this person in the door.

Then how will said random member tell when the band is no longer valid?

If they want to keep wearing a ratty band to avoid paying day pass fees, they can knock themselves out.

I thought if you wanted to bring a friend or family member you could show them around but they couldn’t use anything (training required or not). Immediately family could buy the cheaper ‘add on’ monthly pass/rate, but a friend or roommate couldnt. Is that not accurate?

For instance, if I wanted my dad/friend/brother to come help /me/ on something (where I’m using the tools but it’s their knowledge) is that OK? What about if they want to use a non training required tool whole I’m with them?

Made me go look it up. These are the rules for guests:

  1. Guests can not inhabit the Dallas Makerspace without another keyed Member present.
  2. Guests are encouraged to become Members.
  3. Guests are not allowed to use tools and equipment, except as part of a scheduled class/workshop.
  4. Members are responsible for their Guests and their actions.

And this is the rule for an add-on:

This rate applies to family members (living in the same household) of a member paying the $50/mo or $540/year plan. These members have access to the space but will not be eligible for voting rights.
