Ah that number 3 is the kicker. Although it doesn’t answer if I can have a non-member coach. I seem to recall reading that I couldn’t, say, have my dad come and tell me how to change my oil or something.
According to the rules of the Automotive committee, Category:Automotive - Dallas Makerspace, he can help you provided you are not paying him and subject to guest rule #3 above. I suppose that means he can tell you what to do, but he cannot show you.
And if you use the lift, the owner of the vehicle must be trained.
That is some what accurate, at DMS we define family as:
Family Membership Add-on $10/mo This rate applies to family members (living in the same household) of a member paying the $50/mo or $540/year plan. These members have access to the space but will not be eligible for voting rights.
Rules and Policies - Dallas Makerspace
So your roommate would fit this, but your parents that live across town would not.
As for the not touching tools, it is a bit perplexing. As we have often let non-members use “Non-Power tools”. But that rule says all tools. So I’m not on the BOD and I’m also not a DMS Judge of rules so you might stick with the rule now or we may ask the BOD to possibly clarify that rule. You could also try to post the visit to the calendar and call it a workshop?
We can do that easily: Only $1.6667 day! on non-refundable pre-paid order of 30 days, months having 31 day - 31st day free! February is Donation Month.
Without some kind of access control, I don’t think giving non-members free run of the space is a good idea.
And it seems like a big risk, little reward. Would require adding access control to keep “day pass co-workers” out of the areas with tools. Managing and accounting for their “donation” for using the co-working area. Adding security cameras. Figuring out a way to give a non-member access without having someone on site to assist. Someone to keep stocking K-Cups and fix the plumbing. Someone to roust people who come in just to sleep and overstay their day pass…
I’m sure it could be done, but it probably shouldn’t be done.
Just round up to at least $10 per day to encourage people to join.
I just remembered that sometimes I see people in the DFW area who need to use a Silhouette urgently. They would probably pay $10 to come to DMS and use it - I don’t think the Silhouette requires training?
Are you talking about the vinyl cutter or the Cricket style cutter? I actually think both of those have training needed?
Part of this comes down to the Customer - Member debate. This purely a customer IMO. Someone that walks in for the day will need to be shown around, provided a badge, answer questions: Where’s this, where’s that, how do I I use the color copier, print a lot of colored copies, etc. These will most likely be out of area people that wouldn’t join anyway.
Personally a lot of hassle for nothing. Computer software would have to be modified to handle this, can someone accompany them or does each person have to pay? Can they use the facilities to meet with people? Etc.
I’m talking about the Silhouette Cameo, not the large vinyl cutter.
To me access would be limited to basically use of the Common Room as a place to work. Beyond that, the problems compound even faster than stated. above.
Right. And obviously galley and bathrooms. They’d be welcome to take a tour/be walked around, I assume, as well as get temp access to internet/WiFi…right?
I’d still charge a significant amount in line w/competition (I’d probably follow NoD’s pricing scheme: https://app.moonclerk.com/pay/88jpk8f1170) since 1) there IS risk involved, of various kinds, and 2) per Adam’s link above most other choices are very expensive and typically for a month.
I wish we could figure out what NoD’s numbers are on this, i.e. how many day passes do they usually sell in a period.
I get requests for day passes at least 5 or 6 times a month. I always tell them “Sure, they are $50, or $35 if you are a student.”
Nice spot stopped in the other day
There was extensive debate about this last summer; specifically whether a roommate meets the definition of family or whether it needs to be a consanguine relationship. Here’s the link to the thread. AFAIK, it was not definitively resolved (and like most controversial topics, it wandered wayyyyyy off topic into pretty much everything else controversial …)
Yes it was discussed, but the rule was not change. Also, the rule defines Family Member within the rule to be living in the same household. So until the rule is changed only people that live in the same house as a full member are able to be family members on the full member’s account.
