Summary: Board of Directors Meeting on March 22nd

A number of items were discussed and passed at the last board meeting, for a full breakdown please see the agenda:

Here are the highlights:

  1. Election schedule confirmed, see https://talk.dallasmakerspace.org/t/board-of-directors-election-2015/1778
  2. Intercom System - Brooks will be building out a system so we can make announcements throughout the space. This will likely be used to announce classes that are about to start.
  3. Electrical upgrade - We are upgrading the exterior electrical drop to 100 Amps, this will allow faster electric car charging and will be paid for with a grant from Tesla.
  4. Lasersaur Project - The Makerspace will be funding the build of our next laser cutter, a Lasersaur. Luke Olson will be project lead on this, expect him to post a thread soon with more info.
  5. More tools - We’ve allocated $2,500 to purchase more tools, including more of the Ryobi power tools/batteries, and various hand tools.
  6. More electronics tools - We allocated $1,000 to electronics for various small tools. We also allocated $1,200 to build a high-end PC for the electronics room.
  7. Potter’s Wheel - Conditional approval to purchase a Brent Model C, if the donation of 10-12 similar wheels falls through.
  8. Foundry/Furnace - Allocated $600 for a new furnace and crucibles.
  9. Clarified automotive work at the space - Primary concerns are: 1) no commercial work (per lease and insurance), the owner has to be the one working on the car, though having others help is completely fine. 2) keeping the space clean, please remember to clean up any messes left behind. 3) Keeping the loading area usable, Automotive Committee will be coming up with some policies to make sure people can still work on vehicles while not impacting the usability of the loading area.
  10. Additional savings - $10k was moved from the general fund to savings, increasing our savings to just over $20k.

thank you for keeping us informed!

I’m glad we are deciding on another DIY space funded project. The lasersaur looks like a good alternative to buying a commercial laser. Is there any benefit of a lasersaur compared to the full spectrum (other than DMS supporting it which will hopefully mean less down time)?
