Zilog Discontinues the Z80 Microprocessor

Was just about to post this. The Z80 was a big boost to S-100 systems, the first real affordable business and lab computers.

I wonder if this means the Texas Instruments TI-84 will be discontinued along with it

Iā€™m not sure which is more wrong. That it has had this long a run, or that after so much life, it is finally done.

The odd question is that there is a qualifier there about standalone. Are there versions integrated with other capabilities that will remain in production?

And for those designing and building retro 6502 systems, is the 6502 at risk of a similar fate?

I never used a Z-80, but my first computer was the VIC-20, so I certainly formed an emotional attachment to the 6502 & 6510! Getting that VIC-20 when I was only 13 have been the main catalyst for my software engineering career.

What about the second sources of the Z80?

The Western Design Center has been making 65C02 and 65816 processors and will likely continue as long as Bill Mensch does not decide to retire.
