Carey,

I like the idea of those for home use but not for Makerspace use. The plastic won’t hold up the the industrial environment and constant use.
I’d prefer a magnetic / decent metal holder.

Here’s one from your favorite company… :speak_no_evil:

I’ve had really good luck with these at home:

https://www.amazon.com/MASTER-MAGNETICS-07661-Tool-Holder/dp/B0010Z9S52/

I’ve got all my wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, scissors, grabbers, and a flex head ratchet hanging from these. Used to hang my hammers and breaker bars from them, until I got a pegboard in the shop. All metal construction, with what appears to be epoxy paint and a useless yellow tape strip. 10/10 would buy a 4th one, if I had more stuff to hang from it.

Raymond - I do appreciate your sense of humour!

I’ve always had success with this style.

They are not labelled as to what the size is, but they last and are very cheap. I’ve never broken one, but I have had 3 stolen out of my tool box while on different job sites. Wrote off the loss against the customer and replaced them every time.

NIck,

For sockets those or a version of them are usually the way to go for easy access and even for putting them back - and last forever.
magnetic holders may be the way to go for wrenches
pliers are going to be drawer based and there are wire racks available that organise them so they are not just thrown in the nearest bin(the current way most do it)

Carey - I appreciate this post and am open to ideas on hand tool storage ideas from anyone

I agree,
I loved @Brandon_Green 3D Printed option as it had the external diameter of the socket forcing you to put the sockets in the right place. But, the plastic retainers just didn’t survive our use here at DMS, as I found them breaking within days of setting new ones out. I wish there was and option for sockets that used the retention of the spring metal holder with the outside diameter sorting feature of Brandon’s design. @nicksilva any ideas?

Given how few of our members understand even the basics about shared tool use, perhaps we should start them back at the beginning where their parents should have taught them.

I have used this style in the Transit shop at TAMU. They seem to work quite well. We might be able to 3D print a version to save some money (or find it on Amazon for less than Grainger). The Shafts that poke through the top keep them from falling off, but they have to stay relatively upright. They sockets fit where they belong, labels on the tops of the shafts ease identification.

Amazon has them about $30 cheaper for the set.

I use these from Mechanics Time Savers. Mechanics Time Saver MTSLAS38 3/8" Lock-A-Socket, 14 Piece (18" Long) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TPZLGE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9S1cAbRD1NFG1

They are a Dallas-based company

Those are neat,

I wonder if we could get them excited about DMS? Would be neat to incorporate their design into a Brandon’s design.

Back to work, too distracted by socket storage.

Time savers makes several good products - I use those socket rails at home. the heavy duty magnetic backing is great too.
I didn’t know they were based in Dallas tho - thanks

Walter - I hope to change that in the near future

On the subject of socket holders, I’m using these fancy aluminum bad boys:

They seem to hold up well to my level of abuse in any case.

I love the Westing machine socket trays, just hate the price. Maybe someone who is good at the CNC milling machine could make a set?

Considering the build, those are fairly cheap. They look like they would last forever, or at least until somebody tried to use them as a pry bar.
