Does anybody know how to use 3D scans in solidworks without having the bodies created from them also turn into meshes?
For more context, I took a scan of the bottom of my longboard that I am going to mount electronics to and I need a case to fit over everything. So I threw the scan into solidworks and added a plane to act as the table the board was on, then created one offset from that I sketched out the outline of the case on. I was able to extrude to the 3D scanned surface but the resulting body is a mesh that I cannot edit.
No, I don’t. Another to do your project is use the scan data as a reference, draw some splines and loft the shape of the longboard in SW. If you’re 3d printing the housing and using foam tape to stick it, you won’t benefit much from expending any more effort, since there’s some errors intrinsic to the measurement and the longboard is gonna flex once you stand on it.
Were you able to get the solid model of your longboard? If not, I’d like to do a video tutorial for it; I’ve been meaning to teach a class on something similar. If you’re interested, I would record the workflow and upload the project files here. You’d probably still have to make cutouts for the parts but it’d get you most of the way there.
Not yet, but that’s only because I have not gotten around to working on it. I have used the tools you mentioned so I should be able to figure it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
