Wood Lathe Carbide Cutters

Please do not attempt to sharpen the carbide cutters on the grinders, that will almost guarantee that you will permanently ruin the cutter. Looks like some of the tools have been damaged on a grinder. Carbide cutters CAN be sharpened, but you need to remove the cutter and manually “polish” on a diamond stone, something like 600-1000 grit stone works well. Turn the cutter upside down and polish the top side only.

Carbide also chews up the grinding wheels.

I routinely sharpen my carbides with a 300/600 grit diamond card ($15 to $30 on amazon or your favorite wood supply place) and a little oil. I can get them back to about 80% of new in less than a minute of running them back and forth on the diamond card.
