Hmmm was looking at doing something similar for my own, I think for the size you’re need I see some issue mainly due to need for comms, without custom pcb/smd work that would be a bit difficult, and development of those is quite expensive. If you were to go up in size a bit to be able to utilize commodity electronics like esp32 or something smaller even that provides ble and/or WiFi out of the box that would significantly drop the cost of not only development but production too.
An ESP32 Pico is about 5mm square and contains a WiFi+BT radio. It’s an easy to use chip and requires minimal external components (a handful of caps). Costs about $3.
Great chip. It’s all I use at work anymore. Program in C# using .NET nanoFramework.
The attached picture is of a board design I just finished. The square chip is the Esp32. Its Wi-Fi antenna is directly below.
