Just saw this today. It’s pretty much taken out a 15’ tree in my back yard and looks like it’s spreading to a very large oak of some kind nearby. There’s some kind of web on everything. Did I just let it get too dry and made it vulnerable to this thing?
Those are webworms. My mulberry gets those every few years or so. There are some chemicals you can get at a home improvement store and you’ll need a hose sprayer for best results. Spray the crap out of the tree, including a healthy dose on the trunk, and that generally gets rid of them. The trunk spray is because sometimes they get blown down or fall and they’ll climb back up the trunk to continue eating your tree. After they’re gone I usually go cut off all the dead spots they created.
Seems like either webworms:
or bagworms:
Or something else :–)
Also, Neil Sperry is the man when is comes to gardening advice in texas. He has a weekly newsletter with that week’s gardening/landscaping tasks as well as reader Q&A each week. Very informative, in general.
Yeah, that whole 15’ tree is covered, and there are some spots much higher than that in one of my oaks.
Yep yep…Neil Sperry is great if you don’t mind using chemicals. Howard Garrett " The Dirt Doctor" is the go-to organic guy if you want to reduce the use of chemicals.
