I’ve used our welders in the past, before the more rigorous training was required, and assisted Tim with the repair of our Miller 250. I’d like to qual on all three processes.
I’m down to see more of these; the biggest thing is for instructors to ensure that not only they know the process, but can safety manipulate our particular machines (for example, dealing with wire feed issues on the MIG). I’ve seen some people keep trying to weld when the get the serious popping that results from those feed issues and internal arcing.
As long as that is covered along with the safety, I like this kind of class. Not everyone here is new to welding, but will be new to our machines in particular or our requirements (looking at you people from before safety was a thing apparently).
I do them from time to time. I’ll let you know the next time I’m teaching one. If you catch me around the space in the right mood and I have the time I can probably do it then and there.
The only problem I had with the last (and first) one was that some people were “cheating” off of others so I had to come up with some quick knowledge questions, but it wasn’t bad enough to be of serious concern I just need to be better prepared for it.
