Welding classes scheduled

3 new classes have been scheduled. Welding safety on Feb 8th, intro to stick on Feb 21, and intro to MIG/fluxcored on Feb 28. To attend the stick and MIG classes, you have to have attended the welding safety class. Please make note of this before signing up for the welding classes because you will be turned away if you’re not on the safety roll sheet. Plus there are only 10 spots each available for those classes.

The safety class is open to everyone though, no participant number limit, and is free. The SMAW class is $10 material charge, 10 student limit. The GMAW class is $20 material charge, 10 student limit. See calendar for more details.

More classes to be scheduled in the future.

I didn’t see any calendar entry for intro to MIG/fluxcored on Feb 28, even after I refreshed it. Did I miss something?

Just added it. It’s scheduled though.

I’d be willing to teach an “Intro to TIG” class in early March. Have we obtained a 100% Argon cylinder and regulator?

Yes we have. Also Ed Kim was planning on teaching TIG as well. You could get with him to discuss scheduling if you wanted to.

I would definitely sign up for the TIG class to learn how to weld aluminum. Got a chance to try TIG at a Collin College CE course a few years ago and it was a challenge. Lots of variables - current, waveform, arc length, travel rate - to contend with at the same time. Like being a one man band.
The most difficult part for me was getting the workpiece hot enough to weld without melting. I’m hoping there’s a TIG sensei that can reveal this secret

How do you go about signing up? I didn’t see a link for tickets.

I don’t think you guys are going to have any trouble filling up multiple class schedules, given how much pent-up demand there is for this training.

Should be a link to eventbrite on the calendar now. Thanks a ton to Steve Blanchard for helping me out with this.

Bought my ticket! Yay!

In like Flynn.
Got tickets/spaces for all scheduled so far.
Keeping an eye out for the TIG schedule…

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

~raises hand~

I’m the idjit who just ‘bought’ five tickets to this Sunday’s class.

Attending are two adults and three minors. Minors are ages 14, 16, and 16. The sixteen year olds are fairly competent working under loose supervision (they’ll be under supervision by the other adult in any case) and I’ll be on the 14 year old like a second shadow.

They’re already on the books with waivers and all the rest.

Anything else I need to address or worry about? :cold_sweat:

Aaaaaand the other classes are already sold out. Crud.

Do you know when new classes will be placed on the schedule?

Plus one on tig classes

@ThylacineWings Andrew (@Afloyd) is teaching the class this weekend. He might be able to give you more info about minors in his class. I really don’t know the procedures regarding minors. If not, then @PearceDunlap or @AndrewLeCody surely would know. I personally have no issues with younger students as long as they are accompanied by an adult guardian, but I leave that decision up to the Makerspace admins. As far as more classes being scheduled, I will post them on the talk board and they will be on the calender as soon as we figure out some more dates.

Here are the rules on minors:
https://dallasmakerspace.org/wiki/Rules_and_Policies#Minors

  1. The DMS is not a day care.
  2. Minors 15 and under must be accompanied closely by Parent or Legal Guardian at all times and are not allowed to have keys to the space.
    1. Accompanied closely means visual range generally, and immediate reach when near dangerous tools.
  3. Parents/Legal Guardians are responsible for their children and their actions.
  4. Minors under the age of 18 must have their liability form signed by a Parent or Legal Guardian.

Thanks @AndrewLeCody. We’d reviewed the rules regarding minors when we signed up at DMS and I tend to go over them each time we book a class just to make sure I didn’t miss any updates. All of our forms should be on file with DMS so no worries on that front.

Mostly I was wanting to make sure there weren’t restrictions specific to these classes so that we could be well prepared ahead of time. There’s something about combining kids and fire that tends to make people a bit hesitant. :innocent:

Awesome, we just want to make sure everyone stays safe.

Ed Kim doesn’t appear to be on this forum. Anyone have contact info for him?

If you’re coming today he will probably be there with me.
