I frequently use wall anchors to mount very strong magnets to the wall to hold various tools and what not. The problem is the wall anchors pull out of the wall super easy, I need something that I can mount with number #6/ 32 countersunk machine screws in the wall in such a way that they cannot be pulled out? Any ideas, suggestions?
Are you putting the anchors into the studs?
Nope just dry wall.
Not sure about the exact screw size being a factor however these anchors will not just pop out. At least worth looking into to see if they will work for your application.
I always look for the stud, even if I’m not planning on putting much weight on the anchor. My hearing is pretty good, so I just tap the wall. Hollow sound? Just drywall. Kind of a thunk sound? The stud. They sell stud-finders that are actually looking for the nails. Most buildings are built with 16" “centers”, so that once you’ve found one stud, the next one should be 16" away.
One place that I worked had moved to a house as their office. We were turning one room into a storeroom. Dude installed the shelves measuring 16" from the walls. Load up shelves – shelves fall. He tries from the other wall, Same thing happens. I (considering his measuring plan garbage) go in and tap for the studs. It turned out that the previous owner had built that room as an add-on, and done his own work. Because the studs were on 12" centers…
Another alternative to Toggle Bolts, as Kevin suggested, are molly bolts. Instead of wings that hold them into place, you activate them with a special gun and that causes their flanges to expand out. Both will work well for drywall as long as you get a decent metal anchor.
I’ve had luck with these bad boys. They are rated at over 200 lbs.
The number #6 size was important to me because the magnets are countersunk just for that. This problem is solved I wound up with this:
