All,
It is time to update the names of the areas that you can reserve for classes and events at The Space.
I am going to remove just the plain ol’ “Workshop”, because the area seems to have been partitioned up into distinct areas now.
and add something like:
- Workshop - North Open Table Area
- Workshop - Central Open Table Area
- Workshop - South Open Table Area
I am wondering if it would help to list the number of tables, or maybe include a description as to nearby areas such as:
- Workshop - North Open Table Area (near Woodworking Wood Shop)
- Workshop - Central Open Table Area (near Automotive)
- Workshop - South Open Table Area (near Foundry, Vector, Sciences, Machining)
At the risk opening up a can of worms and starting a flame war, I am looking for opinions and rationale behind them, but please do be respectful. Keep in mind that I like the names of things to be so descriptive as to be almost bland, following the “Law of Least Astonishment” from the Tao of Programming.
Thanks
Gus

I wouldn’t describe it as north open table area, its ambiguous woodshop area with unposted implied restrictions on use. (Woodshop extends outside of dust control room in a not defined by tape on floor way). But I can’t think of a good name off hand
I would propose that tables have numbers for the following reasons:
- When scheduling a class, the number of anticipated tables can be requested. Yes, I understand this will require near psychic like powers, but a SWAG is better than naught.
- Tables reserved for classroom instruction can be listed on white board in the shop area attached to say the central post in the shop (like near the vacuformer), listing the date, time, and table numbers reserved.
- Makers would be on notice they should have the table clear prior to class time thus avoiding confusion and possible confrontations and disappointed students. This would also apply to machines such as the Bridgeport, HAAS, Pottery Wheels, CNC router, Auto-lift, etc. that have scheduled training for them.
- Tables are a common DMS asset but communal DMS use for classes should have priority and if notice is given, then there shouldn’t be ill will.
Again it would let folks know the area has been reserved, which unlike classrooms that are named and have signs posted listing their use plus the events calendar, rooms can be cleared rapidly of squatters, less so of someone in the middle of a project on a table, at least in a timely manner.

Could we have a 'table reserved ’ sign that could be placed on a table ahead of time. It would be great to have a way of listing the hours needed. on it
Perhaps some signage in that area to indicate its purpose would be helpful, especially since the entire rest of the woodworking workshop is just on the other side of the double doors.

Photomancer,
At this point, if I were to add each asset as you listed as a venue, the calendar would get over-busy imho. And submitting events would get tedious as each asset would have to be submitted separately and approved separately. I think that is an enhancement for the next generation of the calendar. For the time being, lets just focus on areas.
Thanks
Gus
Cairenn,
Teachers are welcome to leave ‘Table Reserved’ signs, probably also indicating the class name and schedule would be helpful. I say “teachers” since we are a volunteer run organisation without employees, I am not sure who else would set up the signs.
Thanks,
Gus
Could there be a blackboard or small white board in each area that a teacher could post on before the class? Maybe have a simple diagram so the teacher can write on the table they want, or number them, That way a teacher could post
Table 6 RESERVED Thurs night, 6-8 pm That way folks would know to not use if for a hard to move project ahead of time.
That was my problem with the sign suggestion. I have a class tomorrow (in CA) but there was no way, I could come to the site today, since I had to go to wedding in Rockwall. I have to try to limit trips, due to the distance from home.
No problem, just responding to your original post:
I confess I had not considered nor am I truly cognizant of the IT requirements for the calendar. Your opinion is more than “humble opinion”, it counts a lot if you’re the one that has to make it work. Your descriptors would at least direct persons to the correct area.
Venues have been updated. Thanks Brandon for the suggestion on the north area, I think that you will like the new venue.
