Hi! Does anyone know the type of hinge jewelry boxes use? They are the ones that give some slight resistance when opening the box.
Lots of options out there but you may be referring to torsion hinges?
I have used these torsion hinges mentioned for cedar chests that I made. They are not suitable for jewelry boxes, way over kill and will not work. The lid for the cedar chest was 22"x42"x3/4" and two supported it very nicely.
The choice of hinges is something that needs to be considered from the very beginning
Will the hinges open completely or stop at 95 degrees? If open completely, will a chain be used to stop the hinge just beyond vertical?
Will the hinges be surface mounted, mortised on the back of the box or mortised into the sides?
Will the hinges be solid cast brass, then they will be $$$ or will they be stamped and brass plated?
Will the hinges be barrel type that are completely concealed?
The thickness of the box sides will help in making the decision about the hinge.
FYI: I HATE HINGES
You’re holding back Patrick… how do you really feel about hinges?
Don’t say the H word in front of Patrick - He gets grumpy, turns red and says things you can’t say in Church - it’s not pretty.
Patrick and some box lids were sitting in a tree, h-i-n-ge-i-n-g.
