Does anybody know how to get 37" of workspace on any of the lathes? The most I can seem to get with attachments is 33" and that is how long the final product is supposed to be. If I could get 35"-37" I would be happy. Please help!
I know @wesley910 has made a few bats here in the Woodshop on our lathes…not sure what their lengths were, though. But I haven’t seen him around lately, at least during the weekdays when I am able to be there :–(
I’ll go research myself in a few, but I’d be shocked if our shiny new top-'o-the-line Powermatic lathe doesn’t have the capacity to do this with a bed extension.
I haven’t been around much we just moved into a new house and the packing and moving has taken up a lot of my free time. I would buy ash bat blanks from rockler. Mine were for my younger boys so the bats I made where 29-30"
Powermatic 50" Bed Extension w/Leg. Kinda expensive, though: Powermatic part 6294726B @ CPO Outlets
I believe the powermatic should be able to do it as well. I didn’t want to do much adjusting on that machine by myself though, bc I haven’t used it before.
I have also heard it isn’t available for public use. If that’s the case it seems to be taking up quite a bit of space in the woodshop for such a limited clientele.
I can help you get on the powermatic I’m there for the CNC class tomorrow . Not sure it will fit though.
IIRC max between centers on the Powermatic is 34.5" without an extension.
I’d appreciate that. What time would you like to meet up?
Also, almost certainly not your ideal or preferred solution, but…: https://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/tls/5668106429.html. At least it suggests that there are some lathes out there that fit the bill.
Perhaps adding this extension for one of the mini lathes to the agenda for Thursday committee meeting would be a good idea. It makes more sense economically and availability wise to extend the mini/midi lathes then the power matic. Really don’t want to see the larger diameter AND a long log being turned on that machine, but a bat and most furniture spindles are better suited to the diameter of a mini/midi lathe’s capacity.
My class is at 630 so if you want to meet at 600 we can go over it then. You must have already taken Lathe basics to use the lathes. Have you taken that yet?
No, but I’ve been using the lathes since before that class was offered. Back when Tom was the woodshop manager he vouched for my ability and told me I didn’t need to take it. Does that still hold up?
