We will be trying out these glazes in this Saturday’s class. We have 4 colors available, bring 2 or 3 bisqued pieces so you can try a variety of colors too. It’s recommended to use a manganese-free dark clay or brown/black underglaze/engobe, since the darker color will make the snowflake effect pop more. You can still use lighter clays though! These will also get fired in a special cone 6 program recommended by Amaco, so let me know if you already have this glaze and want your pieces fired in this run
Test tiles are out of our kiln! 5 coats on white stoneware. Left to right clockwise: snow drift (white), arctic blush (pink), frozen fern (green), glacial lake (blue). For each color, the left tiles have brown engobe on the top half and right tiles have black engobe on the top. The darker color really does make the snowflake effect pop more. There is some pinholing on some colors, so I’m hoping the special program will aid that
If there is demand then I’d love to do it again. I’d recommend putting the underglaze or engobe on during greenware stage so there’s no risk of smearing during glazing
Test tiles look good, the program posted essentially had a 30 minute hold after its peak temp during the cool down phase. I think that is there to help with pinhole issues.
if anyone has pieces with kiln ice glaze that they would like included in the special firing, please place them on the special firing/top most shelf by tomorrow morning. if the top shelf is full then leave a note on the piece so we know to load it
