Stan had a great idea last night.
That would be to run an LED strip, on the wall, near the floor, to all the rooms. From the lobby, there would be a master âshow me the way to a roomâ control. You choose a location and the LED would run a color keyed âfollow meâ, to that room for a set amount of time. Starts at the lobby, a 1 foot length color coded indicator that would move toward the room chosen. 3D and electronics would run a shorter time, the Interactive classroom would be longer. Shop locations would be to the center controlled door with a message about needing a badge. And the follow me drops you next to a map.
For space usage, this would be minimal and would not interfer with art shows.
For DMS, it is pretty cool and high tech feature.
It automatically can answer the âhow do I get to this roomâ question.
It is a project that can be written up and published.
Starts with a touch screen with 2 options. Either a map or a list of rooms. Once you tap your selection, it would activate a âfollow meâ. It would be designed to run multiple âfollow meâ designators.
I have not priced it yet.
Location. Lobby is obvious and has some setup issues. Above the water fountain. To the right of the galley. On the wall where the job line is located.
If there is enough positive feedback, I will come up with some $$$ numbers and present it to the board to be my next project after the hallway refresh.

Instead of the walls how about the ceiling. Similar to the light the path feature on airplanes. Iâm sure @Dawsmart could help us plan some blinkinâ LEDs.

Ok I have no idea how this could be done, but I just had
a vision of a panel in the lobby where one could punch a
button for a classroom and a series of flashing lights would
lead one to the right room
Signs would be easier however, but not as much fun!
Names would go above doors.
Blinky lights would lead you there.
Here is the initial LED challenge. There are 3 initial paths and 1 fork near the end. Starting from the doorway leading in from the lobby, next to 3D not the front door. Design 3 light paths from that location. #1 To Electronics. #2 Front Hallway to the Media Room. #3 To the Interactive Classroom then with a branch to the center locked door.
Restrictions. Choose inside or outside hallway wall. Keep it off the ceiling, as much as possible. Running it along the floor boards (3 inches off the ground) as much as possible. Keep it off the floor. Follow door frames.
There could be an implied jump too. Think of following the wall where the Purple Classroom is located. When it come to the General Use Room how do you get to the Conference Room? #1. Go up to the ceiling and across. #2. Skip to the floor board by the Conference Room. #3. Stay at the top of the walls for these 2 rooms. #4. Or something else like a flashing LED bar above the door needed.
Keep in mind French Cleats are going up along ALL walls in the hallways.

Not to be a party pooper, but any system to lead someone from the lobby to a destination needs to take travel time into account. Not too fast and not too slow. Ideal is something like a fleet of escort drones.
A system using LED lighting should be able to lead multiple parties simultaneously. Instead of lighting a single path, it should use something like a moving patch of a specified color for each request so that trips do not have to be spaced 20 seconds apart.

Correct. That was my thought process as well.
A 1 foot color coded âfollow meâ that would move down the correct hallway. Verbally, one could say âFollow the blue pointer to the Interactive Classroomâ.
I think the code to animate movement on a LED strip already exists. The question will be how many âfollow meâ animations can be running at once.
Timing on the âfollow meâ would be based on a slow walk. The actual âfollow meâ should repeatedly run, at a fast walk, from the lobby to the destination, like a dog on a walk. I would like to see a summary of active âfollow meâ and how much longer they will run. If a second person needed to go to the same place, they could ârenewâ that âfollow meâ.
Just had a smart complicating idea. What shows in the lobby is also a list of current classes.

Threada bump. I was about to start a thread but saw one via âsimilar to your postâ great function, by the way.
Iâm about to get vinyl cutter certified in this system and will start posting proposed ideas under general logistics and each department tagged per sign.
The creative arts design on the google drive looks fantastic. vinyl over recycled plastic board in contrast would be a fantastic quick and easy look.
At the moment there is plenty of white space above each door. About to get started on photoshopping after lunch.

We have had several people offer to make signage for rooms.
My preference would be laser cut and lighted over vinyl lettering. Stick out from the walls so the name can be seen.
@PearceDunlap did a ton of work as we moved into this building painting lines to each room and having the name over each door. (Thanks.) That was a cool system that did not survive having the hall repainted. The easiest lines to see are still on the CA hallway wall. They are painted on so almost impossible to remove without sanding or filling the line.
Might be a good thing to get @StanSimmons (electric power) and @talkers in on this conversation BEFORE making signage.

As cool as light-up signs would be I donât see people lining up to take on that job.
There looks to be displays at each classroom and with the new touchscreen right inside the front, it is prime for a way finding map and class/meeting displays for the rooms.

I mentioned a standard font so that some of the guesswork/bike-shedding/bureaucracy could be avoided.
I think thatâs why nothing ever happened after my OP a year ago.
It took me all of a week to learn which rooms were which, and after that I stopped caring.
This is a great project for a new member, but new members arenât likely to push ahead with something like this unless they have permission or a clearly defined target.
