Imo, aperture settings will depend on the lens you plan on using. But you will definitely want the sturdiest tripod you can use.
Go out tonight and get some test shots so you can be ready and have a baseline shutter speed.
I just DM’d you a pdf of a book on astrophotography that has a lot more info and in the appendix some exposure settings for various eclipse and moon phases. It is from the 1990s so it talks a lot about film but the settings should be 1:1
How much does having a very dark sky matter for shooting a lunar eclipse?
You’ll find better info online than I can provide, but I shot a lunar eclipse several years ago using a 500mm f/5 lens and a full frame DSLR with a 24mp sensor with mixed results. I bracketed the hell out of it since I wanted a bridge to be visible in the foreground. I exposed for the bridge then exposed for the moon and combine in Photoshop.
Settings before eclipse began: f/22 @ 1/50, ISO 200. I used f/2 because more open blew the moon out to a white spot. An ND filter would have helped a lot as I hate to shoot stopped all the way down.
By the time the entire moon turned red, I was shooting ISO 640 at f/5 (wide open) for 2 secs (which is way too long an exposure to get a sharp image).
I wish I could shoot this one but a 2:00am eclipse is a non-starter.
Thanks for the insight. The picture is awesome too.
There’s a moon up there. I was afraid the clouds would obscure it too much but I set my alarm anyway and it was cool to look at the pretty red colors. Thanks for the reminder @John_Marlow Blaise said it was worth being woke up for.
I had trouble discerning the red with the naked eye but the telephoto saw it clearly.
Right place. Right time.
