Recessed Splines

Hey folks,

I’m curious about how y’all would attempt to do this.

I have two yokes, one meant for a CV shaft and the other meant for a ujoint. The CV shaft is the one I am replacing, and it has recessed splines on the transfer case end.

It fits like a glove, with the correct number of splines. I’m wondering if this is a simple machine job or if I should go to pick n pull today to try another one lol. It doesn’t need to be precise, but taking a die grinder to it seems odd.

So do you need to Machine down about the first 1/4 inch or so of the seal end of the engagement similar to the old one?

Yes I think that’s what I need to do.

Work holding would be the difficult thing to do. It will probably make better sense to get one from the yard.

I’m thinking that might be some sort of specialized broaching tool.
I can’t think of any way to get a spinning cutter in there.

You’re clearancing splines not building a Swiss watch. Us a die grinder and grind down the splines as deep as you need. Just make sure to clean it well and maybe deburr the ends

Yeah, ended up doing that Saturday, 4x4ing again
