Until the last year or two, 7-zip was consistently one of the first things I installed on my PC. Recent versions of Windows with zip compatibility baked in has largely changed that. Still 7-zip is open source and quite useful.
Windows has had “zip compatibility baked in” since inception (well, Windows 95 had it, anyway, and all newer; couldn’t swear to windows/286 having had it).
rar compatibility, on the other hand, still a no go…
7-zip has never been a favorite, but sometimes gets the job done. I don’t understand why software provided for windows platform only ships in rar. I assume it’s to be funny.
