Got a text from a friend as to what to use “to seal a hand painted bisque item”. I know nothing about ceramics so what would y’all suggest?
What do they want to seal it from? Bisgue is clay that is fired so it no longer melts in water, but it is still highly porous.
Are they speaking of glazing the item?
I would think any glaze would work. The paint your own pottery places
typically use bisque, and they always spray on a vlear coat glaze before
firing.
Sincerely,
Tim Nielsen
So I think what you need to ask them is what’s the end purpose of this item.
If the hand painted with anything the end product is simply decorative. But it still can be sealed just depends on what they used.
She says it’s just gonna be a shelf sitter. Are there any products in particular I can tell her get at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby that she can put on it?
If it is just a decoration them acrylic paints will work great. I like the bottle ones, not so thick.
It was given to her already painted…just need to know what sealer to tell her to get to protect it.
I would say any clear acrylic type sealer should work. I can’t remember what I used many years ago when I was pouring ceramics and then having them bisqued and then painting them
lol…well, she’s not crafty AT ALL, so I need to tell her EXACTLY what to buy. Really like “Go get Joe Blow’s Super Duper Acrylic Bisque Sealer in a spray can probably on the ceramics or paint aisle at Hobby Lobby”…or some such thing. Any product specific suggestions?
Modge podge is a good sealer believe it or not. Comes in a few different finishes now-even outdoors whaaa. It’s pva from what I understand so it’s magic in its abilities.
A clear spray sealant (we use anything on sale) is good and will work just fine. Will probably give it a more professional look if put on correctly. Plus it smells so good usually (Don’t huff paint).
But acrylic paint is a liquid plastic so it will be ok on its own.
Anyways, that’s all I can make up and speak with confidence about tonight.
Let’s see, I have spray cans of Rust oleum Matte and glossy finish clear protective finish from Home Depot and 3 types of mod podge.
I would say a spray, since it is hard to get the mod podge on evenly for someone not crafty. A gloss or high gloss finish will make it look like it was glazed, I used to prefer a satin or matte finish for animals like dragons and unicorns.
