Early every year, before tornado season in the spring, the National Weather Service offers training that is required by many emergency officials and all amateur radio operators that participate in RACES and ARES storm spotter programs. These two hour sessions are open to the public and are fascinating to everyone who is interested in understanding tornadoes and other violent weather. Radar and other technology tools are still advancing rapidly and will be discussed. I am no longer involved in storm spotting for the city of Richardson but find it interesting to attend these sessions every couple of years.
(I’m not supposed to say “tornado season” since they can happen at any time but if you have lived in north Texas for a while, you know what I mean.)
