Looking forward to it. Just joined DMS. I’m really enjoying the classes taught there. Thanks for teaching this one.

I bought some clay at the Trinity sale last weekend. It is the white stoneware variety. Will this work for the class?

that should be fine, the trinity white is fine for our kilns.

White stoneware is fine for what we are doing.

It’s not necessary to have your own clay or equipment prior to the class, but if you have some around you are certainly welcome to bring some.

I will have a list of preferred clays as a hand-out for the class.

Would it be possible to throw something really tiny? Like the size of a thimble? Thanks in advance, Chris

Chris:

Anything is possible. grin

Are you looking to make something that small during the class, or do you need it for another project?

Nathan

If possible I’d like to do it during that class, if there is still space available.

Sure, you are welcome to try your hand at it during the class, just know that we will be rotating turns on the wheels.

As of 8:58pm tonight, Thursday, there are 9 spots left.

Oh piffle. I just noticed that the welding class conflicts with the first two hours of the pottery class. :frowning:

There is always next time, or we can set something up one-on-one.

Pottery class will have a delayed start - we will begin at noon instead of 10am.

Since we didn’t get the additional ice that was forecast for last night, I’m fairly confident the roads will be fine later today, but make the best decision for your own safety and comfort level for driving.

Nathan.

For those of you that missed the class today with Nathan, John and Steve teaching you really missed a great class. While 20 students would have been interesting, the five students that were able to make the class had a great time with all of the one-on-one attention.

Thanks to all three of the instructors for your invaluable help in learning a new skill/hobby. It was a very enjoyable class and an awesome Makerspace experience. I now have a new appreciation for clay, pottery and potters.

Nathan, Steve and John were very patient with us and very knowledgeable about the subject. Like Nathan said “There are as many ways to throw/pot as there are potters.” Even though my pot was not the best, or as Nathan said “It is not going to get any better” because I had “twisted” the clay, I still had a great time. Steve said it best, “don’t get too attached to your work, it is ok to start over.” I’m still going to keep the pot(s), but I can tell that it is going to take a lot of practice to get better.

Thanks guys for putting on a fun class! I look forward to future classes.

I"m now a member of the Foundry committee. I guess I’ve come a ways since Feb of this year. I’ve thrown lots of pots since and I still think I have a long way to go to be any good at it, but it is a very fun hobby. I’ve invested in some tools and bought over 300 lbs of clay now, but it is still a very economical hobby and there is so much to learn.

I am grateful for the people at DMS who have spent their time teaching me to pot, most notably Nathan Jones @Nathan_Jones . I enjoy “getting dirty” throwing pots or as Trinity Ceramics says “Play Dirty”.

Just a reminder for those of you that are interested in ceramics, Trinity Ceramics has their semi-annual sale on clay in January/February. The clay cost is almost 50% off. It is the same price for small quantities as if you had bought 1000 lbs.
They hold this sale before each school semester to help teachers acquire the clay they need for their classes, but individuals can take advantage of it, too.
