New SOLIDWORKS Cloud Apps for Makers

Just received an email at work, announcing the new SOLIDWORKS Cloud Apps for Makers.

Since it is web-based, they say “… you can access your amazing projects from anywhere and on any device when making - including Mac or Chromebook, with no installations or updates needed!”

They also say “… delivers full-functionality 3D CAD tools for personal use for just $48 USD per year.”

Here’s the web page for the Cloud Apps version -

I noticed that there are some limitations:
From the FAQs -
“Are my files or data restricted at all?
Files and data created with your Maker account are digitally watermarked and can only be opened with a SOLIDWORKS for Makers license. You cannot open files created with your Maker account within a commercial or academic platform. This digital watermark is added to native 3D file formats, such as .3dxml, .sldprt, .sldasm, and .slddrw. Neutral 3D file formats, such as .stp or .iges can be opened on any platform.”
(This one appears to mean that it may not interface with the Solidworks on the systems at DMS)

“Who can use the SOLIDWORKS for Makers packages?
SOLIDWORKS for Makers is DIY CAD software designed for personal, non-commercial use. If you sell your products and make more than $2,000 USD in profit per year, you will no longer be eligible to use the software.”

In “profit” per year, you say? Fascinating… HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

The Cloud version doesn’t offer CAM which might be an issue for many. The 3DExperience Maker version does though.

We also have access to a student version of CAD and CAM for use by DMS members. (See Talk posts on that)
