New DMS logo files available

Hi Guys
So I went ahead and created some logo source files and guides on best usage of the new logo.
The files are located in the Files/committees/pr/ folder.

included are the following files:
.eps = illustrator eps file with vector logos.
.psd = photoshop file with shape based layers so you can adjust the size kinda like a vector
.png = kinda like a jpg but with a transparent background.

Please copy the files to your own directory and do not over write the files in the pr folder thank you

I can’t wait to see the new logo used in your projects

thanks !!!

No disrespect towards anyone involved in designing the logo that you made; but, I’m really partial to the Dallas Makerspace Logo that’s already being used. Our logo is recognizable and well liked.

Was there a particular reason you designed a different logo, or were you just looking for a change? It seems something this significant should be brought to vote - or at least openly discussed prior to trying to push a change.

Even though I personally would prefer to continue using our current logo, I realize that it’s not all about my opinion alone. For that reason, I would really like to see input from other members before any changes are made to our logo / branding.

Thanks!

Agreed. Why not take it to a membership meeting?

Posting a thumbnail here for people to look at would be nice.

The logo was brought up at the member’s meeting a while back (November, I’m confident). I also don’t get it. The current logo doesn’t look dated or out-of-style and IIRC the new one reminds me a lot of the old Gamecube logo.

The old Gamecube logo:

but then again… I can’t remember what the new DMS looks like other than saying it looks like the Gamecube logo.

Edit: for clarity

Something else to consider is that something like a logo change costs money. …

New signage, business cards, etc…

Pretty sure this is it in action on the DMS Christmas tree.

Am I mistaken?

Why is it a letter “G” instead of an “M” now?

I can’t make out how it relates to DMS.

Cool shape tho.

The ornament that Pearce created shown on the Christmas Tree is the logo that Micheal created.

I’m on the JUMP server now so I can upload the PNG file for y’all…

Here is the proposed logo that Michael created:

As for meeting or discussion, I meant either a meeting that the discussion was on the agenda to allow members an opportunity to discuss it - out at the very least a post here on TALK specifically to discuss it (which looks like this thread will be a good start…)

Edited for clarification

It appears that I have inadvertently (and very effectively) confused people. I posted the Gamecube logo, not the DMS logo.

Since Google crawls these forums pretty quick and efficiently, I want to add that this is the current Dallas Makerspace logo:

The logo that Michael created and is proposing to replace our logo is posted in my previous response.

I’m on my phone right now. If anyone has a more clear copy of our current logo, please feel free to upload it in place of the fuzzy version I had available to upload at the moment. Thanks!

From the meeting where the logo was “introduced”, I had an overall positive impression of it. Very thoughtful and evocative and nicely symbolic. It is my opinion that much effort went into making it symbolic, which to the best of my knowledge is lacking in the current logo (or none of us understands, perhaps).
However.
I like the current logo for its history, its “official” feeling, and the air of “it means whatever it means to you”-ness, which is a hallmark of “good art”, in my opinion.

Mostly I think a consensus should be reached, and made official (i.e. board approval). Right now it rather feels like some “rogue agents” have decided on a new logo, have started printing it up and distributing it, and no one has any say about it. That’s no beef for me personally, but I think it leads to splintered recognition and, at least in my case, confusion.
I am not interested in doing this myself for a variety of reasons, but should a simple “New logo” vs. “old logo” poll be inserted here?

I personally am little torn, as I tend to be when “new and better in some ways” replaces “old, comfortable, and recognizable”.

I wonder what it looks like with all of the text the same size.

Can someone post it here and on the wiki? https://dallasmakerspace.org/wiki/Logo

First step to getting people used to it would be rebranding website and wiki.

I think both logos are pretty neat. The new one looks new school (sleeker), the old one looks old school (more blocky and dated looking). The old one, though, contains a mechanical sperm looking thing (purportedly a muffler but I can’t un-see the sperm) so I’m going with that one.

Now all of us can’t un-see the sperm.

I’m not overly IT savvy … but I believe there is a way to search the internet for images. Has anyone searched just the Hex with the Wrench? Curious to see if we may be close to someone’s Tm. If anyone has a link on how to do this, I’d appreciate it so I can be less internet ignorant.

Per the description of the original draft of our current logo posted by it’s creator, @Haley_Moore:

I made our icon a plug, which stands for plugging in (unspecified)
tools, robots, computers, etc, and also for plugging members into a
community that shares their interests.

I did a Google image search with just the hex/wrench, and didn’t see anything that jumped out as very similar.

Going to http://tinyurl.com/qxrmvp2 will let you see the results.

A little.
It hugely reminds me of Kobalt tool’s logo (as sold at Lowe’s). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobalt_(tools)#/media/File:Kobalt_Tools_logo.png
But then do a search for “hex logo” and you’ll find it’s a very popular figure…

Two sites I use when trying to locate better copies of an image I already have are:

https://www.tineye.com/

https://images.google.com/

From the TinEye search, I located a couple ‘similar’; but, not the same - unless the two ‘married’ and had lil baby logos…

This is the first one it located when I left the colors as blue and transparent:

This is the one I located when I changed the colors to black on a white background:
