New Class: Setting up Siemens VoIP Phones with Google Voice

Saturday, May 9, 2015 1PM - 2PM in the Lecture Hall

How to easily setup the Siemens OpenStage 40 SIP VoIP phones for free phone service with Google Voice.

Dallas Makerspace has some quality VoIP desk phones it is selling for $20 each, power supplies are available at Tanner Electronics for $7 (or ebay for $9), and a Google Voice to SIP web gateway is available for $6. This class will show you how to setup the phone to get free phone service with Google Voice after an initial, one time, cost of less than $35. Google Voice provides free inbound and outbound phone service to any number in the USA and Canada. The OpenStage 40 phone has a good speaker phone, a large backlit display for Caller Id and 6 programable buttons that can be used for speed dial.

This class is free and open to the public. Dallas Makerspace has several of the phones available at $20 each, and you do not have to be a member to purchase one. The class does not require you have one of the phones to attend, but it is recommended that you have one of the phones, a 48v power supply, and a Google Voice phone number prior to the class.

Anyone who wants to setup their Google Voice account in preparation for the class can follow the simple instructions in the slide show linked below. Google Voice does require a phone line (Mobile or Landline) to get a free phone number from Google.

For those wishing to port another number into Google Voice, that is outside the scope of the class, but information about it can be found here:
https://support.google.com/voice/answer/1065667?hl=en1

There is a $20 one time cost for each number ported into GV and it only works on mobile numbers. Land lines require a double port, first to a mobile service (T-Mobile is cheapest) then to GV.

If anyone wants to create a custom logo for their phone display, the specs are:
Monochrome bitmap (.bmp)
144 pixels wide x 32 pixels tall

The one I’ve installed on the Dallas Makerspace VoIP phones is located here:

I’ll can assist anyone at the class with loading their logo on their phone after the class.

Here is the slide show for the class.

Great class, Stan! Thank you…

Hi Stan,

I found this to be very helpful!
However, some things are outdated and I was wondering if you could please update your slides or tutorial.

When you have a moment, could you please help me?
I’m having trouble with program keys, setting primary line.

Thanks

I don’t have any plans to revamp the slides, but if you have specific questions I’ll do my best to help.
