Making your own large diameter dowels

Does anyone have any experience making their own dowels? I need to make one that is 48" long and 2" diameter. I’ve seen several methods online ranging from a clammed chisel and a wooden jig, to using a table saw and a jig. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure if you are using it for a challenge or what not, I’ve seen dowels that large commercially sold.

Home Depot shovel handle (no need to reinvent the wheel). Getting something that straight on a wood lathe would be difficult. Also we don’t have a steady rest for the powermatic wood lathe which would enable longer pieces

May not be the point, but $17 at Home Depot

I have these for making small diameter dowels and they work great.

They do not go up to 2" however. I agree with Max, too that buying commercial dowels is the most reasonable solution.

You can make them on a lathe alright, but like Max said, you’ll need a jig and some additional tooling to get it right. For instance a “steady rest”.

I might be willing to try the table saw method, although I don’t know how DMS wood shop would feel about it.

I was leaning towards just buying them, but I figured I’d see if anyone had gone the DIY route with any success.

I don’t think our lathes are big enough to make a 48 inch long dowel

Might be able to make one over in 3-D Printing
