Machine Shop Tee Shirt

I’ve been noodling (as opposed to committing to a project) on the subject of a machine shop tee shirt.

One feature of DMS is that it’s the people as much as the tools. Rather than doing something gear or tool themed, I’m thinking of a cartoon like or caricature ‘group photo’ with the active (and prominent late members like Walter Anderson and Nick Silva - maybe as Jedi Ghosts.)

Artwork will be a challenge. I’d want to use line art - no halftones.

Failing the group photo arrangement, maybe a “Brady Bunch on Steroids” set of panels.

And of course it would have to be a “pocket tee.”

What do y’all think?

Many moons ago (1990s) there was a rec.crafts.metalworking group (don’t go there without robust antivirus protection) that sold t’s with a horizontal or vertical splatter line that said: “Yes I run a mill/lathe, why?”.
best,
Jim

I can make an attempt at it if you have photos. I have an artist that I work with… I haven’t asked them to draw people yet but I can ask and try to locate a different artist if they can’t do it.

Thanks. I’ll ask if I get enough consensus and interest.

David Kessinger was really involved in Machine Shop as well. Sure do miss those who have passed.

I still want to do this. I’m going to do a composite group line-art picture based on individual photos.

If you want to be on the shirt, pleas send me:

  • A portrait photo (so I can get your face right)
  • A full body photo in clothes you’d wear to work in the machine shop.
  • Your height (so I can get the group scale correct.)

I’m also looking for good photos of David Kessinger, Nick Silva, and any other late machine shop alumni that folks think should be included. They’ll probably be included as ‘force ghosts’ - maybe perched on a Haas in the background.

Probably the best pic of David is on the Wiki when he posted his SOI for BOD

Gotit thanks. Any idea about Nick Silva? Should Walter Anderson be included. I see tools he donated…

I should think so. He was quite active 'Space-wide and definitely contributed hugely to the Machine Shop knowledge repository. Not sure on best pics, though.

Somewhere buried in my photo archives are picts of Walter building a dulcimer in the Woodshop. Ran across the interesting logo he suggested putting on the dulcimer built here.

Not very high resolution, but here’s an option for David.

Found one of Walter on his 2017 SOI BOD hat throwing. I know there was some of him in one of the open houses.

Ah. I think of this kind of picture as the “corporate Lew Sterrett” picture…

I think of it as “Bunny in the headlights.”
