I suggest two weeks prior to the opening weekend of the State Fair of Texas.
This September weekend schedule would be:
Labor Day weekend,
DMS Annual Party,
Oktoberfest,
State Fair Of Texas opening weekend
October weather is cooler but can be weirdly rainy/cold some years. By that time, SFOT is full-on with OU weekend, etc, after which Halloween stuff comes up. November is when students are gearing up for finals, Thanksgiving travel, Black Friday/Christmas shopping, etc. So I’d suggest claiming the second weekend in early September (12th) after Labor Day weekend before everyone’s year-end plans start unfolding.
I like that idea @nickdangerous. Could we never call The State Fair of Texas “SFOT” again? Just sounds terrible when spoken and spelled out sounds like an after work program. I’m totally kidding here, alternative options, SFT or Big Tex’s Resurrection! Yeah, the second isn’t much shorter, but accurate.
TL/DR Seconding September 12th for DMS Anniversary
Any consensus on the weekend of choice? Still hoping for September the 12th because I’m starting to see some pals planning State Fair outings in October, prepping for Halloween events, etc.
Cool… and wow that’s barely two months from now. Will the PR committee be creating the event on Facebook and elsewhere? Let’s get this rolling early so we can plan for an awesome shindig.
Is this thing still happening? I was told that it may happen on a Saturday, in mid-September, like the 12th. I already have the parking lot reserved for R/C car racing on Saturday, so we will move the start time of the races a few hours earlier to put on a show of R/C cars throughout the day.
R/C car races would be cool to show visiting guests but agreed parking will be tight. We had several hundred perhaps a thousand visitors during January’s preliminary event. I expect this one will be a good bit larger.
@David_Walker
My vote is, you have your event for RC racing as you have in the past, I like the idea of having it start a bit earlier. Not sure if @jhaskins (Blacksmithing Wizard) is planning to do a smithing display, but I would plan to leave room for him to setup. Also, a little room for grilling food might be nice as well.
As for parking, there is plenty! there is almost no one in our facility’s lot on weekends. Though attendees may not be able to park directly in front or behind DMS, there should be plenty of parking with in walking distance of an entrance. Plus, there is still street parking and a large open lot on the other side of the street.
I know the next comment might be that we don’t have permission to park in the other lot. Though that is true, I’m sure we could garner some permission from tanners. Also, this isn’t an every day event and we haven’t pissed off our neighbors to the point that they have tow trucks patrolling open lots so towing shouldn’t be an issue.
