Live streaming my 3D printing on YouTube (using Personal 3D printer - NOT at the 'Space)

Yep when you’ve got a very long print running (30+ hours) and you want a way to check on it remotely…

w00t w00t ~ Right on!

ALL: It was brought to my attention that my response was not the expected response to someone leaving a print unattended. I want to take a moment to make my response clear.

I have been following Andrew’s posts (Profile - Andrew_Taylor - Dallas Makerspace Talk) about HIS PolyPrinter 3D printer that he has been setting up at his home; and, in the moment of excitement for his success, I posted an affirmative “w00t!” in response to his post.

In that moment of excitement for him, I was not thinking about making it clear that he was NOT using a printer at the Space. My apologies for any confusion that my response may have caused.

For those who may be questioning how I could “know” that it was not a printer at the 'Space:

  • I had been following his posts, and knew he had a PolyPrinter at home
  • I actually clicked on his YouTube Live Stream and could see that it was not one of our PolyPrinters (slightly different labels, plus the camera was actually facing the bed… ha? ha? )
  • I was at the 'Space at the time I read his post and responded; and, I knew there was only one printer being used - which was printing something completely different than what he had streaming.
  • After it was brought to my attention that the post was not clear, I checked the remote 3D Printer Status Overview page (https://dallasmakerspace.org/3dfab) and confirmed that the only printer printing still looked different than what he was printing on his live stream.
  • 3D Fab does not have YouTube Live Streaming set-up in the 3D Fab room.

I hope this helps clarify things a bit!

@Andrew_Taylor, to help with further clarification, I added a bit to the subject line to make it clear that you are using your own personal 3D Printer, NOT at the 'Space. Thanks for understanding and again ~ w00t w00t!!

PS: While this instance was NOT the case, just as a reminder: Anytime someone is using one of the Dallas Makerspace 3D Fab 3D printers at the 'Space, the person who is printing MUST stay on site for the entire duration of the print - or find a proxy to remain on site on their behalf if they need to leave for any amount of time. The proxy must be documented on a card and placed in the holder on the printer being used, as per current 3D Fab Rules. Thanks!

Hahahaha I think if I tried to do a 30 hour print at the space I would probably be strung up and beat in the woodshop for hogging the printer, especially on a weekend!

I think that would only happen if you went home without leaving a proxy…

Now if your house catches fire you can watch it burn

The house burning is a valid point.

IF you are leaving this to print, you might want to spend a little money on heat sensors, an electrical cut out circuit and fire suppression.

Food for thought.

Last print that I did at home (on a PolyPrinter) was about 56 hours and I haven’t been able to get the webcam running through Octoprint although I didn’t think about running it through YouTube Live so I’m gonna try that on my next print. I just load up Octoprint remotely and make sure that data is still being fed to the printer and that’s how I know it hasn’t stalled. I have had a print stall on me before (13 hours in and Octoprint lost contact with the printer) and the printer just sat there for a few hours at heat. The worst of the damage was that I had to swap out the nozzle because some of the ABS had charred in it and I couldn’t get it out. If the print had gotten thrown around a bit and more was in contact with the nozzle, then I might be a little more concerned about burning but otherwise I haven’t had much of a problem.

Leaving it printing means that it’s printing while I am doing something else at home. Thankfully I have a very large family and as such there is almost no time that someone is not physically home. I can’t actually even remember the last time at least one person wasn’t here.

Large families are awesome! :family_man_woman_girl_boy:

Sounds like you have things under control…

…and, this thread has helped provide several great tips for others ~ w00t w00t! :dms:

I wasn’t able to get the webcam streaming on the Raspberry Pi, it doesn’t seem to play well with the Livecam VX-800 that comes with the printer. So I am using Open Broadcaster Software on Windows with the camera connected to my desktop and Octoprint just running the printer.

Nice, what are your printing?

One of my signature pieces that I usually print as a giveaway, it’s a gyro that prints fully assembled.
