LeMons Working Session 6/22-6/33

Last night, we got together to make some repairs to the LeMons race car.

We took the opportunity to talk to many curious passers by and we answered several eductional questions, such as:

  • What are you doing? (Swapping the differential and removing the catalytic converter)
  • What exactly is a differential/catalytic converter? (Insert lengthy, rambling explaination)
  • What’s that smell? (It was old, cooked oil from the differential…sorry about that)

Here is a quick overview of the work that was done:

Differential Swap

During a previous LeMons event, the rear differential failed. We replaced the differential and the temporary mounts that were put in place whenever the stock poly bushings (mounts) melted–the original track day fix was kind of amazing:

Catalytic Converter Removal
Catalytic converters restrict the flow of exhaust gas, which can negatively affect performance and fuel economy, and they can get very hot during an endurance race. In the DMS LeMons car ('94 Nissan 240SX), the cat is located directly under the driver’s seat and it was slow roasting the driver like a pork loin. The fix was to remove the case and zeus the connectors to a straight pipe.

Sounds more like a feature then a problem.

FYI

Who would have thought that car seat had a heated seat feature!

Removing the cat - I’m surprised that wasn’t done before, like the first modification. It isn’t a street car- no use for the cat or any emissions - they just slow you down.

Thanks for the reminder! Safety first.

I’ve always thought of the 240sx as a luxury car…

And the cat was bored out, but the casing was getting hot. We removed the casing so that it’s a strait pipe now.
