January 26/27th is Winter Field Day 2019

t’s still a fair ways out, but I’d like to make some plans. I see a couple of options. First, we could take the SIG gear out and have our own group event. I think that has a lot going for it, but since we don’t have a club call we’d need to use our own calls and it might get a little muddled as to what classification to use in the exchange and for submitting the logs. I do have a generator we can use if we go this route. If you’re a fan of this idea can you suggest some possible sites? Ideally we would want someplace we could do some winter camping, a cabin, or at least where we can be and have our gear set up overnight. A geographic high point would be nice. Not being from around these parts I don’t really know the area that well.

Our other option would be to hook up with a local club who’s already planning things and selected a site, and who’s willing to let us come in and set up some antennas and radios and help them with their points in exchange for using their club call. Again, I’m not from around here so I don’t really know what clubs are around here that might be amenable. I know @richmeyer is a member of the Plano group and @grumble is with the metrocrest group. Do either of them have any plans for winter field day?

So, I’ve been doing so reading on the ARRL and FCC websites, as well as this great post. http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/planning-and-operating-a-special-events-station.249795/
I don’t see anything that would specifically prevent us from going that route if we wanted, except possibly that most of the special events are to commemorate a specific event. I suppos we could either just try and see if we can get it approved as a winter field day special event, or someone could try and find some interesting bit of local history that just happens to fall on the January 26/27th time frame that we could use as a fig leaf.
