Items Missing from ELab

That’s interesting.
Was it a black and yellow DeWalt?

I do not recall the color.

Depending on what time this was “missed”, I may have had the Fluke meter. I got one for a period of time on Sunday when we were trying to figure out what had gone wrong with the Multicam keypad. It was returned on the same day.

The Fluke 115 meter has been missing for some time.
Test equip drawer in tool box had 2 Fluke 115 and 2 Fluke114 meters

This problem has been solved by retail locations.

Tag the items alert when they leave the room.

Easy to do now in a separate room.

Not so easy after the move…

a modest proposal to “permanently” tether some of the tools to the tables/ furniture? curious if that’s been brought up before.

Check out projects like Open Beacon

https://www.openbeacon.org/device.html

At the simplest level it would detect when it left the room. A bigger build would allow for locating a tool within a room. Even further build could be a front end GUI that you click what tool you are looking for and it would tell you which room it is in.

It was done on the NI Gear. I am not sure if it was done on other gear.

there are also UHF RFID tags (Gen 2) for inventory control that can be read many feet away and identify all items within range.

range is still limited, but they have advantages of being commercially available for pennies/tag and no need to change batteries.

with judicious placement of readers it should be possible to get a good idea where things are going.

A tethering system was tried about 2 (?) years ago. Did not work/end well.
Comments, problems, etc were posted out here.
Tag systems have been discussed.
At this point I favor a good video system and posting the guilty here.
Serves as a warning to others.
Does need regular users of the ELab to be observant and note when things are missing.

Sigh.

The painting was finished on Friday, 2/1. I walked 102 Saturday around 1:00 and didn’t see any heat gun. Where in 102 did you see it?

I really hope it was there for painting because if not, then I still have a problem with people and strange things continuing to show up in 102 despite my efforts to stop them. I’ll ask the person who did the painting.

Heat gun was not over next door.
It was taken to automotive.
Interesting how it was missing for ~3 days - but was not seen there while missing from ELab.
Have frames from video of the guilty.
Getting ready to post along w/ warning.

Thank you. Sorry it went walkabout but you don’t know how relieved I am that it wasn’t in 102.

Is it too soon to install cameras over there?

It’s too early if we care whether they get destroyed during construction.

How about a sign-out sheet for members to indicate what they take and where in DMS they are working. Of course it has to be clear the sign-out is only for other locations within DMS and not off-site. This would be for expensive or major items and when an item is going to be out for more than a few minutes.

Honest folks do sign out/sign in.
Video is currently the best deterrent.
After the move we may consider some kind of rfid to time mark the video.
Interesting observation - the items that are still missing were not stolen to be resold.
Guessing they’re sitting on someone’s home workbench.

I was just referring to honest folks who use tools in other areas and forget to put them back.

Also there’s the folks that are in a hurry.
