Is #8 big enough?

I have an item with a #6-32 RH thread in it. I need a LH thread instead.

The math suggests that I can probably drill my tapped #6 hole with a #8 tap pilot and tap an 8-32 LH thread. What does practical experience say?

It’s a set screw so it’s not structurally significant. I don’t care if the internal thread isn’t perfect as long as the bolt will hold.

I’d rather not go to #10 if I don’t have to because of the item with which it mates.

If you went with a number 27, it would be a 50% fit. It would clear all the threads out all together. Vs the number 29 Is 75%

Should I use an H2 or an H3 tap?

H3 would be a little bit larger not by much than the H2. Just say around .0005” larger
