Interest Check: Leather Dopp Kit Project before Father's Day

Will do. I’m going to scope out leather today, figure out a cost, then list the class. With the amount of interest shown so far, I’ll likely do two classes.

I know I’d like to make one of these for myself at least, that’s really nice looking.

I’m still finalizing costs, but it looks like it’ll land at $15 per kit. I believe I will have enough for 12 kits total, so we can do two 5 person classes, and have a couple extra kits if someone wants to purchase them.

Materials included in the kit:

  • Leather
  • Thread
  • Zipper
  • Zipper Pull

Once I have this finalized I’ll post the classes. Stay tuned!

I am definitely interested in the class and another kit.

Thank you for putting this together.

Do you have a Dopp kit with a pen pocket? Then I would be interested.

No but you can store cold beer in it.

Update on the Dopp Kit Classes

I have submitted two project classes to the calendar this morning.
They will appear on the calendar and ready for signup Sunday by Noon.

Tuesday, June 6, 630-9:30 | https://calendar.dallasmakerspace.org/events/view/2586
Wednesday, June 14, 630-930 | https://calendar.dallasmakerspace.org/events/view/2587

I will post here again when I see that the events show up on the calendar.

Also, I was able to get the price down to $15 per kit. I will likely have “extra” kits, so if you’d like a second one to make on your own you can purchase one during class. Money will go directly to Creative Arts, so it’ll either be cash in the black box, or a Card on the terminal.

Another update. Now that I’ve cut the leather for the kits, I may not have more than 1 or 2 extras. I visually misjudged what I could get, but I have enough for 10 kits for sure. I might be able to get another 1 or 2 though. FYI.

Also, I made one to show what this particular leather looks like. It’s supple, and has some nice texture to it. Please excuse the terrible photo.

Is that a hand-stitched zipper?

Yes sir it is!

My stitching technique might seem a bit odd at first, but it guarantees nice straight stitches if followed.

Yeah, I think if I tried to hand stitch a zipper the sewing police would come lock me up.

lol. my process is easy, and it’s repetitive. I’ll show you sometime. It’s really simple. promise.

I would love to make a Dopp kit. I’ve seen some really nice ones on Reddit with leather and canvas, too. But, my making of stuff at this point is limited to planning and researching (and ordering stuff!) until we get some more urgent family stuff taken care of. Not even gonna be able to make the picnic! :frowning:

Also, I may not have extra kits after all. Talk to me during class if you absolutely want to be able to make a second one and we’ll work something out.

Thank you for teaching the class. I learned quite a bit and the kit turned out really nice.
