My daughter is a junior in high school. She is in the Honor society and it requires a certain amount of community service to be a member in good standing.
She spends most days on the side of the highway picking up trash or volunteering at animal shelters. This is all well and good but…
DMS is always needing cleaning and straightening up. And DMS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
Would it be possible to bring her for a few hours to clean and straighten things up in order to receive community service?
If so, we should consider this with other students to gain a steady source of general labor to clean up the space for free?
I believe that @Lampy son did this by helping clean and inventory the Electronics room a while back. So I think it is certainly possible, but you will need a coupld of members (other then yourself) to sign her paperwork if I recall correctly.
Also if she is not on a family member plan (or under 16) you would need to supervise her time at the space.
She is 17 and I will be with her. Pretty sure it’s not that critical who signs the log, just as long as it’s a member of the 501(c)(3).
Is there a cleaning checklist? say for a cleaning crew? example, sweep floors, empty trash, inventory bathroom supplies and kitchen supplies, etc.( maybe each committee can provide a small list of detailed cleaning tasks for each area)
If not, I will set up a mini maintenance volunteer program (MVP) with a spreadsheet checklist. That way Future students can just download the MVP form and follow it, then seek out a member for approval.
We can promote this service to area high school Honor Society programs and maybe get a steady stream of volunteers…
@Travis_Zinger, @wandrson is correct my son has worked about 14 hours of community service for DMS. I can’t take credit for most of the cleanup in electronics, it was him. You do need someone else to monitor and signoff on their sheets.
At LHS that have several types of service and they have to get 60 hours per semester. Holy crap it’s a lot, especially if you have to drive them around.
This sounds like a pretty good idea. The honor society at FMHS is pretty big and I’d imagine they always need interesting sources of credit hours. We should reach out to them
Do we have a current floor plan of DMS with room labels? (pdf format woudl be best for me) I want to add a map to the checklist to make sure all areas are easy to find.
I have created a “Draft” checklist for general cleaning at DMS. Ultimately, I will get input from each committee and I will revise the checklist to be more specific to our needs. Please feel free to comment and I will update accordingly.
One possible addition (if ladders are ok) would be find missing ceiling tiles and replace them. Or maybe count how many are missing and where, so we can buy more.
I’m currently working on a monthly general inventory list (will be done today) and a general room upkeep list. She is WELCOME to work on anything on that list at anytime. It will be posted in the room.
I’m sure I can come up with several things for them to do as well. Also - Open House in September will be a goldmine of hours for kiddos to help out. I’m going to talk to my NHS about it.
