HP 6459A 0-64V 0-50A DC power supply

I have an HP 6459A 0-64V 0-50A DC power supply I will donate if there is interest in it.

It would be perfect for plating, charging, running telecom gear under test… I have no 3ph at home :frowning:

It is a serious beast of a power supply, capable of continuous duty across the entire range. It does require 3 phase 208, normal light commercial lighting but can be wired for 240 to 380 3ph also.

19" rack mount
DC Output: 0 to 64 V; 0 to 50 A
Constant voltage/constant current operation
Remote programming: remote resistance, or a remote voltage source
Protective Features

  1. AC line loss protection circuit
  2. Three-phase input circuit breaker
    Input Power: 208 Vac, ± 10%, 3-phase, 7 A/phase, 57 to 63 Hz (standard)

Approx. Weight: 238 lbs.

Not my site but same model: HP6459A

Damn, I thought the Sputter Coating PSU’s were heavy at 100lbs.

One on eBay for $1,495.

I can’t think of a use for it in the eLab but what a wonder to have.

With those voltages and current capabilities, it would significantly expand the spot welding capabilities…

I think this one wouldn’t walk off.

This would be awesome for plating

This would be awesome! Even if it ends up in someone’s garage rather than at DMS, it could be excellent for anodizing and plating.

Well it seems to be pretty well suited for use at DMS, I’m going to donate it.

What’s the process for donations? I’m fairly sure it isn’t just bring it in and leave it on the floor.

You need the approval of one of the committee chairs; @Haley_Moore @artg_dms @Kluper

Do we have 3 phase power in the electronics room? I’m going out on a limb and saying no. I hate to turn down great equipment but it might not be feasible to use in the electronics room due to the power requirements. If there is another committee that could use it, it would be great, but unfortunately we’re limited to our room at this time.

The E lab does not have 220v 3 phase. There may be 220 3phase somewhere in the shop area. I don’t think the front part of our bldng has any multi phase pwr readily available.

We did request 240V but it went nowhere.

If electronics doesn’t want it, I’d be happy to take it off your hands. Already designing the rack to mount this thing

I think he was offering it to the space. Someone was talking about anodizing/plating.

But it’s his psu to do with as he pleases. Thank you @BillHeckel

There is 3 phase power at a twist lock connector in the Machine Shop. It has been used by several pieces of equipment.

Although I would love for this to be put to good use at DMS and I’m fairly certain the twist lock connector in the show is the correct type if we don’t have a place to put it, and it really does need either a rack home or wheeled cart, then I’ll consider gifting it to the maker with the best use case.

It would be sad to scrap for copper although I bet there is nearly 100 pounds in the 3 phase transformers

I would check with someone in Vector. They were looking for a high power DC supply. @Nick @Nick

Or the chair of vector

LOL @Nick twice. :slight_smile:nice lamp.

I was thinking we would want a large power supply to make some example mechs. So possibly, I’ll talk with Jayson next I see him and see where he sits on the idea. Thanks for keeping us in mind on this.

Yeah, the selector kept picking you even though I was trying to select the ‘other’ Nick.

I’m going to be at the space a couple times the next few weeks so if anybody is interested, speak up soon. I don’t want to put this on the floor but I need to use the wheeled cart I have it sitting on and the cart is at the floor height of the subaru…
