Getting Started with Microchip SAMD

I’ve been putting together a “Getting Started with Microchip SAMD” class. I ordered 12 SAME51 Curiosity Nano boards. SAME51J20A Curiosity Eval Board After tax and shipping, the cost is $12. TONS of performance! Very configurable.
Here’s the webpage I’m putting together for a class: Getting Started with Microchip SAMD - Embedded Workshop

Any interest? I’d need a sponsor.

I am so glad to see both of you still around.

I am on extended temporary relocation and do not expect to be back in town for several months minimum.

I am still a member and would sponsor your class except for the minor detail that I cannot be there.

We need to get the band back together and see whether we can make Embedded Workshop a weekly thing again.

Brady went to theLab.ms

young Nick Webb went to college. He should have graduated by now, but I do not believe he is back in the area

Walter is sadly gone

Hello Jim!
Electronics can sponsor you. The process will similar to what we did for your last class here at DMS.

Send me a DM w/ details, dates, etc. and we’ll go from there.

Hi there what are you trying to do?

Initially, I was trying to determine interest in a SAMD “Getting Started” class. The timing may be a little off. Everyone is involved with Christmas related activities at the moment. If there’s interest, I’ll probably put something on the calendar in January. I’ve been using a SAMD51 at work and I’m rather impressed with the number of peripherals, how the peripherals map out to pins, the number of internal clocks and how new clocks can be generated using a “GCLK Generator”. I’ve been using the DWT counter to time SPI-FLASH functions with sub-microsecond granularity. Reading is fast, writing isn’t bad, but a sector erase for a W25Q64JV is rather slow - 45ms (TYP) to 400ms (MAX).

I’d like to see a few individuals show interest for a class, else I’ll just drop the subject.

Hi there, I’m Bill (it seems one of many). I graduated with as an EE this May and have recently moved to Dallas. I joined DMS this past weekend. I’d be interested in taking the SAMD class if you offer it. I have experience with the new attiny 0-2 series and have recently begun looking at their dsPIC33, so it’s well timed.

IIRC, dsPIC33 is a PIC24 with DSP features added.

I have dabbled with PIC24 in the past. Nice architecture, but not very popular.

J I would absolutely love to attend your class.

Let’s schedule this “Getting Started with SAME51” class for Jan 22nd, 7:00PM - 9:00PM.

  • Allow up to 10 people to sign up for the class. (I have 10 boards available)
  • No charge for the class
  • The “SAME51J20A Curiosity Nano Evaluation Kit (EV76S68A)” boards cost $12 each. (I paid $10 for each board. After including tax and shipping the cost per board is $12).
  • Everyone participates!
  • Bring your laptop
  • Bring a USB - Micro B cable
  • To allow us all to get started in a reasonable amount of time, please install MPLABX as directed via my webpage for this event: https://merkles.com/wiki/index.php/Getting_Started_with_Microchip_SAMD
  • The xc32 compiler has updated to 5.0. If this option is presented, choose 5.0. (Either the 4.6 or the 5.0 will work fine.)

Art G, if there’s any problem choosing this 7:00PM slot on Thursday, Jan 22nd, please get back to me. It appears “Idea to Implementation: Building Smart Sensors for the Makerspace” may be using the normal room. Wednesday, Jan 21st works just as well for me…

I’ll be adding additional projects to the web page mentioned earlier. (We need a “Hello World” project!)

If interested, check out the Curiosity Nano projects I have posted on github:

Hope to see you there!

Thurs 1/22 looks pretty busy. All large class rooms are booked.
Wed 1/21 the Lecture Hall and Interactive are currently available.
Think we’ve used the North Lobby class room in the past. Easier access for non members.

Very good. Let’s make it Wednesday, Jan 21st, 7:00PM - 9:00PM, North Lobby class room.

Thanks Art !

North lobby class room is booked.
Lecture Hall and Interactive are available.
Sorry for the confusion.

Choose the better classroom for me and post it to the event calendar.
Preferably the one with bigger monitors…

Thank you

Class has been submitted.
1/21/26 Wed, 7:00p - 9:00p
Interactive Classroom

Should show up on Event Cal within ~48 hrs.
Class will be in the Interactive Classroom - has 2 large monitors.

Due to a quirk in creating the class I had to use “electronic workbench tools”. Not needed.

Look it over when it posts and let me know if there’s any issues.
