Ford E350 Shuttle Bus Repair

Got the bus up on jack stands so that all wheels are off the ground

Starting to look into why the rear brakes don’t function (will do a little bit if you pump the brake pedal 3 or 4 times, but just holding pedal to the floor the rear brakes do nothing, can spin rear axle by hand). Others have been looking into brakes more and could describe progress better.

If it has hydroboost as most Diesels do, you will be hard pressed to get the brakes going without that hydroboost. A few months ago I lost me serpentine belt, I had to stand on the brakes to get to stop. This was on 35. You should be able to bleed them however without issue.

Can you clarify what you mean by hydroboost?

It has vacuum lines connected to it.

hydroboost is Ford’s name for using power steering fluid to provide brake boosting through hydraulic pressure.
Here’s a photo of the difference between hydroboost and vacuum brake boosters:

I’m 90% sure this one is vacuum boosted.

Which, having said, your pedal will still be a rock without the engine running (or some other vacuum source), but this is to be expected on anything which has sat so long. Basic operation should still be obtainable, like any other hydraulic braking system (e.g. bleeding them through, as Tim suggested).

If it isn’t hydroboost, but vacuum assisted, then there must be a vacuum pump somewhere to verify. No manifold vacuum in a diesel.

Perhaps this may help;

Yeah my mistake. I was thinking it was hydroboost & not vacuum boost.

Yes that’s correct it has a external vacuum pump. I am not saying that it’s not connected to power steering but I am saying it has a
Vacuum brake booster

Has anyone used Ford motorcraftservice to look at service manuals? Paying $20 for 3 day access to actual service manuals sounds like a decent deal (got tired of trying to find a torrent of the service manual). I assume it would be much better than a chilton / haynes manual

Got rear 3rd axle separated from rest of brakes, started bleeding everything and bleeder on front right was already rounded and rusted in

Used angle grinder to flatten sides before using crescent wrench to get it off. Ended up just getting a new caliper which was only $50 since one of the pistons was chipped.

We now have a 22 ton pneumatic bottle jack, key feature being the handle making it easy to position without having to be under what you are lifting. We also have a pair of 22 ton jack stands, not that I should have to mention it, but keep in mind you should never be under something supported by only a jack
