Floating Shelves

Has anyone built/hung floating shelves? I’d like to make and install some in the CA Digital Arts room to display dye sub samples around the equipment.

I haven’t done so yet but I need to make some for my house, concept is simple enough. The shelf ‘box’ is built so that it slides onto a frame that is screwed into the studs in the wall. You can make the shelf box with just butt joints or get fancy with mitered edges/etc.

Cary, Rockler sells the hardware to make floating shelves very easy. https://www.rockler.com/blind-shelf-supports

The big issue is that the sheet rock here is terrible and our studs are sheet metal. Look at what happened to the Digital Media TV: Ode to the Fallen

You’ll need to do something like what Metal Shop and Laser have, where we use 2x4s to distribute load across the length of a stud and across studs.

IKEA makes a cheap ($20) but decent LACK floating shelf for the price of the Rocklear hardware.https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/lack-wall-shelf-white-stained-oak-effect-60383519/
